BROOKINGS — A jigsaw puzzle tournament will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Feb. 2 at First Lutheran Church Gym, 337 Eighth St., in Brookings. The deadline to register is Jan 12.

Space is limited and it's first come, first served. The tournament is organized by Phi Upsilon Omicron.

For more information, contact PhiU_PhiAlumni@hotmail.com or call Madeleine at 605-695-4589.

Two divisions are set up: family and adult.

The Family Division will have a 400- to 500-piece puzzle for a four-person team made up of two adults and two youths. The youths must be eighth grade or younger. Entry fee is $30. The Adult Division will have a 750- to 1,000-piece puzzle for a four-person team. Entry fee is $50. All teams in each division will use an identical puzzle.

This year Phi U is sponsoring two-person teams (mentor and mentee) from the Brookings County Youth Mentoring Program. Four teams were sponsored last year and thoroughly enjoyed this winter activity.

Tables will be provided. Participants may bring trays to sort puzzle pieces. Puzzling will start at 1 p.m. sharp whether or not all team members are present. Puzzling will stop at 5 p.m. There will be a short 10-minute break around 3 p.m. All puzzling will stop.

First and second place will be determined by puzzle completion in the shortest amount of time. If puzzles aren’t completed in the time allotted, judges will determine placement based on a count of unattached pieces. All decisions of the judges are final. Bottled water and snacks will be provided; participants may bring their own non-alcoholic beverages and snacks.

Any profit (after tournament expenses) will be used to support academic scholarships, professional development opportunities and community service projects completed by members of the local collegiate and alumni chapters of Phi Upsilon Omicron, which is the National Honor Society for Family and Consumer Sciences.

This event is sponsored by the SDSU Phi U Alumni Chapter that is based in Brookings.
