Ranger boys dominate Huron, beat Aberdeen in overtime

The Brookings Rangers boys varsity team had a successful weekend as they won two games. The Rangers beat Huron 9-0 on Friday night and then came away with a 3-2 overtime victory over Aberdeen on Saturday.

Brookings is now 8-1 and plays at Sioux Falls East on Jan. 17 at 8:15 p.m. They then host Pierre Oahe on Jan. 18 at 8 p.m.

Friday

Brookings 9, Huron 0

BROOKINGS — The Rangers scored three goals in each period.

Waylon Carroll got the scoring going just under four minutes into the game and he was assisted by Talon Hyde and Luke Honkomp. Honkomp then scored a goal of his own on the power play two minutes and 21 seconds later. Honkomp was assisted by Riley Linstad and Hyde. Linstad scored the final goal of the period with 4:32 left in the period. He was assisted by Jay Harris.

Harris then made it 4-0 two minutes and 25 seconds into the second period. That goal was unassisted. Honkomp netted his second power play goal of the game with 8:38 left in the second. Maxten Jensen and Linstad assisted him. Jensten then scored a goal of his own with 4:12 left in the period and it was assisted by Linstad.

Honkomp scored his third and fourth goals of the game in the third. The first one came a minute and 32 seconds into the period and he was assisted by Linstad. The next goal came with 12:36 left in the period and was assisted by Jason Ready. Parker Nielsen would score the final goal of the game for the Rangers. The goal came on the power play with 6:37 left in the game and it was assisted by Linstad.

Brookings outshot Huron 58-4. Matthew Bothe made all four saves for the Rangers.

Saturday

Brookings 3, Aberdeen 2 (F/OT)

ABERDEEN — After falling behind 2-0, Jensen completed the comeback with an overtime goal on the power play with 3:36 left in the overtime. The game-winning goal was unassisted.

Micah Kranzler put Aberdeen up 1-0 with 9:31 left in the first period and it was a short handed goal. Jaxon Danielson then made it 2-0 with 34 seconds left in the period.

Honkomp got the Rangers on the board with an unassisted goal with 14:34 left in the second period. Hyde then tied the game up with 2:32 left in the second. That goal was assisted by Linstad and Jensen. Neither team scored in the third period.

Brookings had 38 shots and Aberdeen had 18. Bothe made 16 saves and earned the win in net.
