The Brookings Rangers girls varsity team came up short on Saturday night as the Rangers fell to the Sioux Falls Flyers in four overtimes in the championship game of the State Tournament.

Rangers fall short in four-overtime state final

SIOUX FALLS — The Brookings Rangers girls varsity team came up short on Saturday night as the Rangers fell to the Sioux Falls Flyers in four overtimes in the championship game of the state tournament.

The Rangers advanced to the championship game on Friday night as they beat the Pierre Oahe Capitals 3-0 in the semifinals. The Rangers finished the season with a record of 17-7.

Friday semifinals

Brookings 3, Pierre Oahe 0

The Rangers scored a goal in each of the three periods on Friday night.

Kinzey Grendler got the scoring going with just under eight minutes left in the first period. She was assisted by Ashton Otteson.

Grendler then put the Rangers up 2-0 a minute and a half into the second period. The goal came on the power play and it was unassisted. Grace Devries then added an unassisted goal with 1:30 left in the game to make the final 3-0.

Brookings had a 22-19 advantage in shots. Rorii Quam was in net and had the shutout for the Rangers.

Saturday championship

Sioux Falls 3, Brookings 2 (F/4OT)

The Rangers fought back from a 2-0 deficit, but then ultimately came up short in overtime.

The Flyers broke a 0-0 tie with two goals in the second period. Ragyn Peska put Sioux Falls on the board with 10:32 left in the period and she was assisted by Lucy Nelson and Halle Watson. Lily Gorra then scored a shorthanded goal with 4:12 to go in the period and she was assisted by Nelson.

Brookings fought back with two goals in the third. Grendler pulled the Rangers within one with a goal with 12:31 left in regulation. She was assisted by Miyah Foerster. Otteson then tied things up with 6:18 to go in regulation and she was assisted by Khloe Ziegeldorf.

The Rangers and Flyers would play three overtimes and it wasn’t until there was 4:19 left in the fourth overtime that Sioux Falls scored the game-winning goal. It was Halle Watson who found the back of the net for the Flyers and she was assisted by Rebecca Harris.

The Flyers had a major advantage in shots as it was 64-31. Quam made 61 saves for the Rangers, while Moriah Lincoln made 29 saves for the Flyers.
