GRAND FORKS — South Dakota State outscored North Dakota 46-17 in the second half on Wednesday night and the Jackrabbits beat the Fighting Hawks 66-45 at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.
The Jacks (20-3, 10-0) trailed 28-20 at halftime. The Fighting Hawks then led 31-24 just over two minutes into the second half. SDSU proceeded to go on a 17-0 run over the next six minutes and led 41-31. The Jacks took a 41-35 lead into the fourth quarter.
SDSU opened the fourth with another big run as the Jacks stretched the lead to 52-37 with 6:47 to play in the game. SDSU would then push the lead to 64-42 before winning by a final margin of 66-45.
SDSU shot 43.6% from the field in the game and was 7-of-20 from three.
The Jacks first half struggles stemmed from their shooting as they shot 21.9% (7-32) from the field and were 2-of-12 from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes.
It was 11-11 at the end of the first quarter. UND then opened the second quarter with a 14-4 run and that led to the Fighting Hawks lead at halftime.
SDSU was led by Brooklyn Meyer who had 19 points. Haleigh Timmer had 14 points and surpassed 1,000-career points on Wednesday night. Mesa Byom had nine points and Madison Mathiowetz and Katie Vasecka each had eight points.
UND shot 41.9% from the field and was 4-of-17 from three in the game. The Fighting Hawks were 7-of-20 from the field in the second half and had 15 turnovers in the final 20 minutes. They had 27 turnovers in the game that led to 27 points off of turnovers.
Jocelyn Schiller had 13 points to lead the Fighting Hawks. Walker Demers had 11 points and Kiera Pemberton had nine points.
UND had a slight advantage in rebounds, 31-28. The Jacks were 11-of-16 at the free throw line and the Fighting Hawks were 5-of-8.
It was the 10th-straight win overall for the Jacks and the 57th-straight victory over Summit League opponents for SDSU.
The Jacks will return home on Saturday and will take on Oral Roberts. It will be an early start between SDSU and ORU as things are scheduled to tip off at 11 a.m.
