BROOKINGS — A collision involving two tractor-trailer trucks Friday afternoon in Volga led to minor injuries, a fuel spill, and an estimated $125,000 in damage.
The incident occurred at 1:34 p.m. at the intersection of Caspian Avenue and U.S. Highway 14, according to a Monday news release from the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office. The vehicles and their drivers were Sergei Penrod-Curtis, 37, of Brookings driving a 2008 Peterbilt with an enclosed trailer, and Charles Schoellerman, 18, of Beresford driving a 1994 Peterbilt with an enclosed trailer.
Penrod-Curtis reported foot and hip pain after the accident, Assistant Sheriff David Biteler wrote, adding that both individuals were checked at the scene by Brookings Ambulance staffers, but required no further treatment.
Per the release, Penrod-Curtis was travelling north on Caspian Avenue and had stopped at the red light on U.S. 14. When the light turned green, he entered the intersection and was struck by Schoellerman, who was travelling east on U.S. 14. As Schoellerman approached the intersection of Caspian Avenue, he noticed that the light was yellow. When he entered the intersection, he noticed Penrod-Curtis’s vehicle start to move.
Schoellerman said he tried to maneuver to avoid the other tractor-trailer, but was struck on the passenger side, just to the rear of the cab. The collision caused damage to Schoellerman’s fuel tank, causing a fuel leak. The Volga Fire Department was able to contain the fuel spill and an emergency response team from the South Dakota Soybean Processors assisted with the subsequent cleanup.
Biteler said both tractors sustained damage and had to be towed, and that Schoellerman was issued a citation for failure to obey a traffic signal. The sheriff’s office is continuing to investigate the incident, he added.
Other responding agencies were the South Dakota Highway Patrol, Brookings County Emergency Management and utilities personnel from the city of Volga.
