Sioux Valley and Deubrook Area picked up wins in boys basketball and Arlington was victorious on the girls’ side on Thursday night.

Sioux Valley and Deubrook Area picked up wins in boys' basketball and Arlington was victorious on the girls’ side on Thursday night.

The Cossack boys took down the Fliers with a late bucket and Deubrook blew out Arlington.The Cardinal girls had a close victory over the Dolphins. In other area action Elkton-Lake Benton was swept in a doubleheader against De Smet.

Boys

Sioux Valley 55, Flandreau 53

FLANDREAU — Maverick Nelson made a lay up with 5.6 seconds left on Thursday night to lift the Cossacks over the Fliers.

The Fliers turned it over on the ensuing possession to seal the win for Sioux Valley.

Flandreau had a 12-5 lead after the first quarter. The Cossacks then cut the lead to 27-24 by halftime. Sioux Valley then outscored Flandreau 20-17 in the third and it was 44-44 heading into the fourth.

Nelson had 18 points to lead the Cossacks.

Alfie Henderson had 21 points to lead the Fliers. Paul Parsley had 13 points, five assists and five rebounds. Micah Otto had 11 points.

Sioux Valley is now 8-5 and plays Tispaye Topa in Volga on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Flandreau is now 9-7 and hosts De Smet on Tuesday at 6:15 p.m.

Deubrook Area 65, Arlington 25

The Dolphins dominated from the opening tip on Thursday. Deubrook had a 22-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and then took a 42-19 lead into halftime. The Dolphins then outscored the Cardinals 18-2 in the third and 5-4 in the fourth.

Deubrook shot 45.3% from the field and was 7-of-18 from three. Chance Schoenfeld had 19 points to lead the Dolphins. Braxton Bednarek had 12 points. Joshua Moburg and Isaac Gass each had seven points.

Arlington shot 27.5% from the field and was 1-of-14 from deep. Miles Antonen had 11 points to lead to the Cardinals. Paxton Rheault had nine points.

Deubrook is now 7-8 and hosts Great Plains Lutheran on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Arlington dropped to 1-2 and hosts GPL on Saturday at 4:45 p.m.

De Smet 75, Elkton-Lake Benton 64

Tanner Drietz scored 37 points in a losing effort for the Elks on Thursday night. On the other side Grant Wilkinson set the De Smet single-game scoring record with 46 points.

The first quarter was the difference in the game as the Bulldogs outscored the Elks 20-10. De Smet then had a 40-29 lead at halftime and extended the lead to 55-42 heading into the fourth.

Joseph Nibbe had 10 points for the Elks. Riley Nordmeyer and Tanner Stein each had six points.
Noah Luethmers had 14 points for the Bulldogs. Sam Gigov had eight points.

The Elks are now 11-4 and play at Baltic on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Girls

Arlington 55, Deubrook 54

The Cardinals came from behind in the final quarter to get the win on Thursday.

Deubrook led 10-8 at the end of the first quarter but then it was 24-24 at halftime. The Dolphins outscored the Cardinals 16-11 in the third. However, Arlington had a 20-14 advantage in the final frame.

Arlington shot 42.2% from the field and was 7-of-23 from three. Jaelyn Huntimer had a huge game for the Cardinals with 32 points, eight rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks. Emma Spilde had 10 points and Emarie Vincent had six points.

Deubrook shot 46.3% from the field and was 5-of-15 from beyond the arc. Mataya Gouws had 18 points to lead the Dolphins. Matte Bauman had 15 points and Kylee Johnson had 11 points.

The Cardinals are now 13-4 and host Great Plains Lutheran on Saturday at 3:15 p.m. The Dolphins fell to 13-4 and host Castlewood on Feb. 13 at 6:15 p.m.

De Smet 59, Elkton-Lake Benton 23

The Lady Elks dropped to 5-10 with the loss.

ELB was led by Payton Kuehl who had nine points. Sydney DeVries and Charlie Thooft each had four points.

De Smet was led by Hazel Luethmers who had 22 points. Alyssa Asleson and Ivey Schoenfelder each had nine points.

The Lady Elks play at Canistota on Monday at 6:15 p.m.
