SISSETON — The Sioux Valley softball team closed out the regular season with a doubleheader sweep of Sisseton on Thursday afternoon. The Cossacks beat the Redmen by a combined score of 28-2.
The Cossacks finished the regular season with a record of 15-5. As of right now they are in eighth place in Class A and would host a SoDak 16 game on Tuesday if that holds. However, other teams still have games to play on Friday and Saturday.
A 10-run first inning put the game out of reach right away for the Cossacks.
Riley Stirling hit a two-run single to put the Cossacks up 2-0. A bases loaded walk and error doubled the lead and a two-run single from Leah Forbes made it 6-0. The next run came on a Morgan Lemme ground out and Stirling followed with a two-run single to make it 9-0. The final run of the inning came on an error.
Sioux Valley added another run in the second with a Kassidy Smith single. A two-run double from Carson Uecker hit a two-run double and another error made it 14-0 in the third. Sisseton scored two runs on a single in the fourth to make it 14-2.
An RBI single from Lemme and an RBI triple from Stirling made it 16-2. Stirling then scored on a dropped third strike and that made the final 17-2.
Stirling was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and Uecker and Forbes were each 1-for-3 with three RBIs. Lemme was 1-for-5 with two RBIs and Smith was 1-for-1 with an RBI. Abby Axtell was 2-for-3.
Lantgen pitched a complete game for the Cossacks and she gave up two earned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and no walks.
The Cossacks offense stayed hot as they jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first two innings. They scored two runs in the first. Lemme and Audrey Murano drew back-to-back walks with one out and Amelia Jacobson then hit a two-out triple to make it 2-0 heading into the second.
Sioux Valley then scored five more runs in the second. Murano came to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs and Lantgen scored on an error. Axtell and Jacobson then followed with back-to-back two-run singles to make it 7-0.
The Cossacks then put the game away with four runs in the fourth. Forbes hit an RBI single and Forbes and Smith scored on a ground out from Axtell. Jacobson then ripped a double into the left field gap and that scored Axtell and made it an 11-0 final.
Jacobson went 3-for-3 with five RBIs and Axtell was 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Smith was 1-for-2 and Lemme and Forbes each went 1-for-3.
Lemme pitched a complete game shutout for Sioux Valley. She gave up one hit and had five strikeouts and two walks.
