Sioux Valley teams qualify for State, six Flandreau runners qualify

The Sioux Valley cross country teams both qualified for State on Wednesday afternoon as both the Cossack boys and girls finished in third place as a team in the Region 2A Cross Country Meet at Meadowcreek Golf Course.

Sioux Valley teams qualify for State, six Flandreau runners qualify

VOLGA — The Sioux Valley cross country teams both qualified for State on Wednesday afternoon as both the Cossack boys and girls finished in third place as a team in the Region 2A Cross Country Meet at Meadow Creek Golf Course.

Flandreau also participated in the meet. The top 20 individuals qualified for State and the Fliers had four girls and two boys qualify.

The Class A State Meet will be Oct. 26 at Hart Ranch Camping Resort in Rapid City.

Girls

Sioux Valley finished in third with 53 points. Maci Licht led the Cossacks, coming in sixth place with a time of 19:14.80. Amia Ward finished in 11th place (20:46.70) and Liberty Trygstad came in 15th (21:21.30). Ava Gatzke came in 21st (22:05.90) and Amya Ward finished in 23rd (22:23.80). Talya Vincent was the final competitor for Sioux Valley and she finished in 25th (22:33.80).

Flandreau came in fourth with 55 points. Faith Wiese was the top finisher for the Fliers as she came in third with a time of 18:44.00. Calla Wiese came in 14th (20:59.10) and Josie Hamilton came in 18th (21:37.50). Kiley Westberry finished in 20th (21:48.40) and Tenley LeBrun came in 24th (22:27.00). Morgan Sheppard rounded things out for the Fliers, coming in 28th (23:05.50). 

Sioux Falls Christian won the team portion with 12 points and the Chargers had the top two finishers in Ellie Maddox (18:26.60) and Sadie Pettengill (18:34.10). They also had fourth and fifth place in Jerica Glasser (18:52.40) and Natalie Smith (19:03.50). West Central finished in second place as a team with 46 points.

Boys

The Cossacks came in third on the boys’ side as well with 71 points. Carson Wosje paced Sioux Valley by coming in ninth with a time of 17:42.60. Bret Milton came in 21st (19:04.40) and Tyrus Schulz and Dubhlainn Vermeulen came in 23rd (19:12.80) and 24th (19:16.70), respectively. Levi Axtell came in 30th (19:38.50) and Carter Sapp finished in 43rd (20:52.90).

The Fliers finished in fourth place with 83 points. Brenton Westberry led Flandreau as he came in 15th with a time of 18:32.80. Logan Kontz came in 18th (18:39.50) and Nathaniel Hobbie came in 26th (19:23.20). Sam Schmidt and Wyatt Kontz finished 31st (19:50.70) and 32nd (19:51.10), respectively. Daniel Hobbie came in 34th (20:00.10) to round things out for the Fliers.

The Chargers won the boys team portion as well with 13 points and they had the top three finishers in Levi Vander Leest (16:46.70), Jackson Prins (16:53.80) and Josh Fletcher (17:00.60). West Central’s Jonathan Roth came in third (17:10.50) and Madison’s Dylan Geerden came in fifth (17:16.10). West Central finished in second as a team with 40 points.
