BROOKINGS — The South Dakota State track & field team held its first meet of the indoor season, hosting the SDSU Holiday Open at the Sanford Jackrabbit Athletic Complex on Friday and Saturday.
The Jackrabbits will take a break for the holiday before traveling to the USD Alumni Meet in Vermillion on Jan. 18.
South Dakota State set two new program records and eight first-place finishes on Friday night.
The Jackrabbits had a stellar night in field events with three individuals winning their events. Jaiden Boomsma won long-jump with a mark of 5.75m while Rylan McDonnell on the men’s side finished runner-up in with a mark of 7.07m.
Madison Kizer represented the Jacks in the high jump, taking gold with a mark of 1.73m. Hunter Wallster finished first in weight throw with a mark of 19.25m, a full meter further than the second-place finisher.
SDSU also saw an excellent performance in the sprinting events. Jared Wipf had an exciting night as he broke SDSU’s 60m record with a time of 7.31 to take gold. Jake Werner cruised in right behind him to finish second with a time of 7.34 for a new personal record.
James Pierce also managed to take a program record. Pierce took gold in the 300m with a new SDSU record of 33.65.
Carter Toews and Hudson Schroeder dominated in the 200m. Toews placed first with a time of 21.66 while Schroeder finished right behind him in second at 21.82.
Brielle Dixon showed up and showed out, winning the 60H with a time of 8.31, a tenth of a second short of the program record she set at the SDSU Indoor Classic last year.
In distance events, Nathan Notgrass finished second in the 5000m with a time of 14:58.05, less than five seconds away from his personal record.
Cade Sanvik opened his collegiate career with a gold in the mile, clocking a time of 4:19.76
Lindsey Rotz opened her collegiate career with a first-place finish in the 800m with a time of 2:14.29. Hannah Spoden finished on Rotz’s tail with a time of 2:15.01 to take silver.
Gunnar Gunderson, Colton Manock, Thailan Hallman, and Jeremiah Donahoe rounded out the night in the 4x400m relay, finishing runner-up with a combined time of 3:20.92.
South Dakota State wrapped up the Holiday Open with the discus throw, heptathlon and pentathlon on Saturday morning.
Katelyn Darnell represented the Jackrabbits in the pentathlon. Darnell posted a new personal record in the high jump, clearing 1.54m to take fourth in the event. Darnell finished the day with 3216 points for a third-place finish.
SDSU dominated in discus to close out the meet. Mildred Young outperformed her field, throwing 46.89m for a mark nearly 10 meters further than the second-place finisher. Ryann Moline, Lydia Hill, Kaitlyn Bot, and Kiylee Westra also competed in discus. Moline threw a mark of 36.41m for third, Hill finished fourth with a mark of 36.40m, Bot took fifth with a throw of 35.95m, and Westra’s mark of 34.59m placed her sixth.
On the men’s side, Caiden Frederick and Ethan Fischer claimed first and second, respectively. Frederick posted a mark of 52.65m while Fischer threw 52.46m. Jackrabbit Caymen Gebheim competed unattached, taking bronze with a throw of 51.97m. Also competing for SDSU were TJ Christensen and Ryan Hackbart. Christensen threw 44.36m for fifth while Hackbart took sixth with a mark of 43.35m.
