BROOKINGS — South Dakota State running back Nate White died Wednesday morning in Brookings. He was 20.
The cause of death has yet to be released.
“At approximately 6:44 a.m, a roommate to White located at 1000 Seventh Avenue South called 911 to report that White was not breathing and unresponsive in his bed,” Brookings Chief of Police Michael Drake said in a news release Wednesday afternoon, describing the residence as a duplex. “Efforts by Brookings Ambulance and police units to resuscitate White were unsuccessful, and so the Brookings County coroner was notified. The coroner pronounced White deceased and ordered the body be removed to Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls for an autopsy.”
David Erickson is the county's coroner, and Drake said the results from the autopsy can take between three and four weeks to arrive.
White spent two seasons at Wisconsin before transferring to SDSU in January. The three-star recruit out of Milwaukee did not play a snap for the Badgers, but was expected to be the Jackrabbits’ starting running back this fall and had three years left of eligibility.
"Jackrabbit football is a brotherhood and today we are all hurting with the shocking news of the loss of Nate White" SDSU head coach Dan Jackson said in a statement released by the school on Wednesday. "Nate impacted our program with his hard work, determination and overall positive spirit. We grieve with his family and will honor his memory throughout the upcoming season."
