South Dakota State sweeps North Dakota State

BROOKINGS — The South Dakota State softball team swept North Dakota State over the weekend.

The Jackrabbits outscored the Bison 25-5 in the three games and two of them ended before the seventh inning.

SDSU is now 24-20 overall and 9-3 in the Summit League. The Jacks will play a doubleheader at Iowa State on Monday and the first game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

Friday

SDSU 10, North Dakota State 0 (5 inn.)

The Jacks opened the series with a 10-run victory.

SDSU scored four runs in the first inning. Mia Jarecki walked to begin the bottom of the first and then came home on a Brooke Dumont triple. Abby Gentry then hit an RBI single and Akayla Barnard hit a two-run triple to push the lead to 4-0.

The Jacks added another run in the second. Jarecki hit a one-out single and then scored on a Dumont triple.

SDSU ended the game in the fifth with five runs. Dumont led off the inning with a walk and then Gentry hit a home run to right field to make it 7-0. Alli Boyle and Barnard then walked and Madi Conklin homered to center field to end the game.

The Jacks had nine hits. Gentry was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Conklin was 1-for-3 with three RBIs. Barnard and Dumont were each 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Boyle and Jarecki were each 1-for-2.

Sylvia Shromoff pitched the first four and two third innings and got the win for the Jacks. She gave up one hit and had three walks and no strikeouts. Tayler Baker got the final out for SDSU.

Saturday

Game 1:  SDSU 3, North Dakota State 2

The Jackrabbits won the low-scoring affair in the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday.

SDSU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Jarecki led off the inning with a single and then scored on a Gentry single to give the Jacks the lead.

NDSU tied the game in the top of the third. Ava Chavarri doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a fielder’s choice two at-bat’s later.

The Jacks answered with two runs in the bottom of the third. Emma Vike hit a two-outdouble and Dumont followed with a walk. Gentry then came to the plate and hit both runners home with a triple.

Jessica Delatorre hit a home run to right center field to lead off the fourth but neither team scored the rest of the way and the Jacks came away with the win.

The Jacks had nine hits as a team. Gentry was 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Vike was 3-for-3 as well. Barnard, Conklin and Jarecki were each 1-for-3.

Tayler Baker got the start in the circle for SDSU. She pitched three innings and gave up two earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Hailey Herman pitched two innings and picked up the win. She gave up one hit and had two walks and no strikeouts. Madi Mangulis pitched the final two innings and picked up the save. She gave up two hits and had one strikeout and one walk.

Game 2: SDSU 12, North Dakota State 3

The Jackrabbits filled up the scoreboard again in game two of the doubleheader on Saturday.
Jarecki and Vike hit back-to-back home runs to lead off the bottom of the first and the Jacks led 2-0 after one inning.

NDSU answered with three runs in the top of the second. Savannah Henzler hit a two-run triple after Rylee Henderson singled and Delatorre doubled. She then scored on a Zoe King ground out.

The Jacks responded right away with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Alivya Bollen hit a one-out home run to tie the game. Jarecki then walked and Vike singled. Both runners came home on a Gentry single, making it 5-3 heading into the third.

The Jacks then scored five runs in the third. Conklin walked and Emma Christensen followed with a single. Bollen then launched one over the left center wall to make it 8-3. Jarecki then doubled and later scored on a Dumont double. Vike hit a single and came home on a sacrifice fly from Gentry to make it 10-3.

SDSU ended the game with two runs in the sixth. Gentry led off the inning with a single. Kendall Daniel then pinch hit for Boyle and homered to center field to end the game and the series.

SDSU had 14 hits. Bollen was 2-for-3 with four RBIs and Gentry was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Daniel was 1-for-1 with two RBIs and Vike was 4-for-4 with an RBI. Jarecki was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Dumont was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Conklin was 1-for-2 and Christensen was 1-for-3.

Shromoff pitched a complete game for the Jacks. She gave up three earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts and no walks.
