BROOKINGS — South Dakota State took of three games against Omaha over the weekend at Erv Huether Field.
The Jackrabbits opened the series with a victory on Friday and then won on Saturday to clinch the series victory. Omaha came away with a win on Sunday in the series nale.
SDSU is now 12-20 overall and 6-9 in Summit League play. The Jacks will hit the road this week as they’ll play at Minnesota on Wednesday and then play a three-game series against St. Thomas Thursday-Saturday.
South Dakota State scored ve times in the bottom of the third inning and Dylan Driessen pitched 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief as the Jackrabbit base- ball team opened a three- game Summit League series with a 7-5 victory over Omaha Friday afternoon at Erv Huether Field.
SDSU sent 10 men to the plate in the third inning, which started with a bang as Jess Bellows connected on his rst home run of the season, a solo shot to left eld. After Dagen Schramm walked and Bryce Ronken was hit by a pitch, Nolan Grawe drove in the second run of the inning with a double to center. That would be the rst of four consecu- tive hits by the Jackrabbits as Carter Sintek, Luke Luskey and Owen Siegert followed with successive run-scoring singles to knock out Maverick starter Oliver Mabee.
The Jackrabbits increased their lead to 6-0 in the fourth inning when Davis Carr scored on a wild pitch.
Freshman right-hander Caleb Duerr held Omaha scoreless through the first four innings, but ran into trouble in the fifth. The
Mavericks loaded the bases as the rst three hitters in the frame notched base hits, two of which were in eld singles. Henry Zipay walked to force in the first Maverick run and a second run scored on a groundout before Mason Gaines hit a two-run double to center field to pull Omaha to with- in 6-4.
The Mavericks cut the de cit to a single run the next inning as Blake Stenger was hit by a pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly after stealing his third base of the afternoon. Ty Madison came on in relief of Duerr to record the rst two outs of the inning before giving way to Driessen.
A right-hander from Omaha, Driessen did not allow a hit in posting his second save of the season. He struck out six, walked two and hit one batter. Duerr, meanwhile, scat- tered eight hits over five-plus innings, striking out three and walking one.
Luskey swung the momentum back in the Jackrabbits’ favor at the plate by hitting his league-lead- ing ninth home run of the season with two outs in the home half of the seventh. His solo blast to left eld was his second hit of the game and helped pace SDSU’s 10-8 advantage in hits.
Schramm also tallied two hits for the Jackrabbits, while Jackson Trout notched a pair of hits for Omaha.
Three South Dakota State senior pitchers combined to hold Omaha in check and a trio of Jackrabbit freshmen provided the bulk of the o ense in a 13-3, eight-in- ning victory in baseball action Saturday afternoon at Erv Huether Field.
Nolan Grawe put the Jackrabbits out front two batters into the game as he connected on a Ben Weber offering for a solo home to left-center eld, marking the rst collegiate round-trip- per for the freshman from Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Omaha answered with a solo home run by Jackson Trout in the top of the third to tie the game at 1-all.
SDSU then scored runs in bunches in the second half of the game, scoring the next seven runs with three in the sixth and four in the seventh. Carter Sintek started the rally in the sixth with a single and later scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. With two outs, fresh- man Owen Siegert doubled and came around to score on a single through the left side by classmate Keagen Jirschele. After a walk to Adam Benes, Jess Bellows followed with a run-scoring single to make the score 4-1.
Siegert continued his hot hitting with an RBI single in the seventh and Jirschele added a sacrifice fly later in the frame. Luke Luskey factored in the other two runs of the inning as he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in the rst run and capped the outburst by scoring on a wild pitch.
Owen Bishop tossed two scoreless innings as the opener for the Jackrabbits, followed by two innings from Alex Clemons. Jake Goble tossed three shut- out innings until giving up solo home runs to Trout and Tyler Bishop in the top of the eighth as the Mavericks cut the margin to 8-3.
Trout tallied each of the Mavericks’ first four hits ofthegameashewasa perfect 4-for-4 on the day and nished a triple short of the cycle.
The Jackrabbits ended the game an inning early with a ve-run eighth. Sintek hit his rst home run of the season for the rst two runs of the frame and Siegert recorded his third double of the game, lining a pitch to the left-center gap for two more runs. Benes drove in Siegert with a single to center to put the 10-run rule into effect.
Siegert ended the afternoon 4-for-5 with three runs batted in, while Grawe was 3-for-4 and scored three times. Benes added two hits for the Jackrabbits, who held a 13-6 advantage in that category.
Bishop and Clemons each notched a pair of strikeouts, while Goble fanned five in his four innings of work in picking up his first win of the season.
Omaha starter Ben Weber was assessed the loss after allowing four runs in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out five and walked one.
Omaha pounded out 24 hits and scored in ve consecutive innings en route to a 19-5 victory over South Dakota State in the nale of a three-game Summit League series Sunday afternoon at a windy Erv Huether Field.
The Mavericks, who salvaged the last game of the series, improved to 12-20 overall and 6-9 in league play. SDSU fell to 7-23 overall and 4-9 in The Summit League.
After being held score- less in the top of the rst inning, the Mavericks gained the lead with a three-run second, starting with a with a two-run single by Grant Sommers. The go-ahead run later scored on an error.
The Mavericks added a run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Noah Greise, then began to further distance themselves with a ve-run fourth that was highlighted by a three-run opposite field home run by Blake Stenger.
Drew Borner added a two-run homer in the fth inning before the Mavericks hung seven runs on the board in the sixth inning on seven hits. Jackson Trout continued his hot hitting in the series with a two-run double, while Mason Gaines doubled in a run and Sommers tallied his third RBI of the game with a run-scoring single.
All five of SDSU’s runs scored on home runs. Luke Luskey opened the scor- ing with his league-lead- ing 10th home run of the season, a two-run shot to right eld. Adam Benes added a two-run homer in the fourth inning and pinch-hitter Dayton Franke capped the scoring with a solo blast in the home half of the sixth.
Henry Zipay and Tyler Palmer each collected four hits for Omaha, with Trout, Stenger and Borner each tallying three hits.
Luskey was joined by Carter Sintek and Owen Siegert in posting two of the Jackrabbits’ 10 hits in the contest.
Omaha starter Maddox Meyer worked the rst ve innings, striking out ve and walking none while giving up four runs on eight hits.
Reece Arbogast took the loss for the Jackrabbits after allowing four runs over three innings. He struck out two and walked one. Five other SDSU pitchers saw action out of the bullpen.
