LINCOLN, Neb. — The South Dakota State volleyball season saw its best season in the Division I era come to a close as they fell to the No. 8 Miami Hurricanes in three sets during a first-round NCAA Tournament match at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Friday night.

The Jackrabbits finished the year with a 27-3 record, but they couldn’t get past a Hurricanes team that was one of the nation’s best.

The Hurricanes opened with a strong first set, breaking away midway through the opener and holding SDSU in check defensively on the way to a 25-17 victory. The Jacks went on an 11-3 run to open the second set, but Miami surged with a 7-0 stretch to take the lead at 7-0.

While SDSU was able to take a lead on back-to-back kills by Sylvie Zgonc and Katie Van Egdom followed by a Zgonc ace, Miami closed the set with three straight points to win the second set 25-23.

Miami finished the match in the third set, using an 8-1 run to open things up early and winning 25-15 to advance to Saturday’s second-round match against Nebraska. The Hurricanes were swept by the Huskers as they advanced to the Sweet 16 of the tournament.

Zgonc had nine kills to lead SDSU while Sydni Schetnan had six kills. Van Egdom also had five kills for SDSU.

Zgonc also had an ace and two blocks while Schetnan had five blocks for the Jacks.

Rachel Wieber had an ace while Alyssa Groves had a block. Rylee Martin led SDSU with 12 assists while Camryn Honn had eight assists and Zgonc had two.

Wieber and Martin had 10 digs each. Honn had nine digs.

Flomarie Heredia Colon led Miami with 21 kills. Ariana Rodriguez had a game-high three aces. Dalla Wilson led the Hurricanes with six blocks, Rodriguez led with 35 assists and Taidaliz Rosado had 14 digs.
