KANSAS CITY — South Dakota State’s record-setting season may have come to a close on Tuesday night as the Jackrabbits lost in five sets to South Dakota in the Summit League Tournament championship match.
It was just the second loss of the season for top-seeded SDSU and it gave the No.3 seeded Coyotes their fifth tournament title in program history. USD punched its ticket to the NCAA Tournament on Tuesday night, while the Jacks will have to wait to see if they get an at-large bid on Sunday when the NCAA Tournament committee announces the bracket at 4 p.m.
SDSU and USD traded points in the first set. SDSU led 18-17 and then scored four of the next five points to go up 22-18. The Jacks would then score three of the next five points and won the set 25-20.
The Jacks and ‘Yotes were tied 6-6 in the second set when USD went on a 5-1 run to go up 11-7. USD would then lead 18-16 and went on a 7-2 run to close the set out and won 25-18.
USD led the third set 10-0 and then went on a 7-1 run to go up 17-10. The Coyotes carried that lead the rest of the way and won 25-19. SDSU dominated the fourth set. The Jacks jumped out to a 12-3 lead and didn’t look back as they won the set 25-16 and forced a winner take all fifth set.
SDSU jumped out to a 3-1 lead in set three but the Coyotes responded with six-straight points to go up 7-3. USD then led 10-7 and scored four of the next five points to go up 14-8 and force a match point. SDSU scored back-to-back points and forced a USD timeout but the ‘Yotes would score out of the timeout and secured the Summit League title.
SDSU had 61 kills and hit .204 in the match. The Jacks were led by Sylvie Zgonc who had 19 kills and seven digs. Alyssa Groves had 10 kills and eight blocks. Sydni Schetnan had nine kills and eight blocks. Rachel Wieber had 22 digs and seven assists. Camryn Honn had 22 assists and 18 digs. Rylee Martin had 22 assists and 14 digs. Madison Burr had nine kills and Joslyn Richardson had 11 digs and seven kills.
The Coyotes had 73 kills and hit .239 as a team. Kylen Sealock had 23 kills and six digs. Cheyenne Hlady had 18 kills and seven digs. Avery Van Hook had 54 assists and 13 digs. Lauren Medeck had 13 kills and 19 digs. Kamryn Farris had 30 digs and Amanda Loschen had 10 kills.
