BROOKINGS — A Brookings man facing allegations of stabbing his former girlfriend multiple times was in the Brookings County Detention Center on Friday afternoon.

Shawn E. Running Horse, 31, has been charged with felony aggravated assault, according to information from the Brookings Police Department.

The case unfolded after the BPD received a 911 call on Thursday at approximately 9:30 a.m., Chief Michael Drake wrote in a news release. Officers responded to a residence near the intersection of Birch Avenue and Orchard Drive.

“The investigation revealed that the suspect ... engaged in a domestic dispute with his 37-year-old ex-girlfriend in the basement of the residence," Drake wrote. “During the dispute, the suspect became violent and allegedly stabbed the victim several times with a knife.”

Drake told the Brookings Register that the woman suffered at least three stab wounds — two defensive wounds on her arms and a wound in her stomach.

He also told the Register that she was transferred to a Sioux Falls hospital for further treatment after initially being taken to Brookings Health System and was expected to survive her injuries.

Drake said that in addition to Running Horse and the woman, three other people were in the residence during the alleged attack. They were:

  • The woman’s two teenage children.
  • An adult male considered to be a family friend.

The status of court proceedings for Running Horse wasn’t known as of Friday afternoon.
