Stellar pitching leads Brookings Bandits to doubleheader sweep

BROOKINGS — The Brookings Bandits swept a legion baseball doubleheader against Spearfish on Tuesday night at Bob Shelden Field.

Brookings won game one 5-3 and then took game two 8-2. The Bandits are now 9-6 and play in the Marshall Wood Bat Tournament this weekend in Marshall, Minn.

Game 1: Brookings 5, Spearfish 3

The Bandits scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth and then held off Spearfish in the top of the seventh to get the win in game one.

Spearfish took the lead in the top of the first with a sacrifice fly. They then extended the lead to 2-0 with an RBI double in the top of the third. The lead then grew to 3-0 when a run came home on an error in the top of the fourth.

Brookings got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Cooper Schneider hit a single to right field and Breck Wilson came home to make it 3-1.

Tre Christopherson led off the bottom of the sixth with a single and Jase Bauer followed with a double. Christopherson scored on a Schneider single to make it 3-2. Tane Friedrich then came to the plate with one out and hit a double that sent home Bauer and Scheider to give the Bandits the lead. Friedrich scored on an error to extend the lead the 5-3.

Spearfish went down one-two-three in the top of the seventh and the Bandits came away with the win.

Brookings had six hits in the win. Schneider was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Friedrich was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Bauer was 2-for-3 and Christopherson was 1-for-2. 

Tyson Antonen pitched the first five and two thirds innings for the Bandits. He gave up three runs, two earned, on six hits with five strikeouts and four walks. Breck Wilson pitched the final inning and a third and gave up no runs and one hit with one strikeout and no walks.

Game 2: Brookings 8, Spearfish 2

The Bandits scored six runs combined in the fifth and sixth innings and came away with the win in game two.

Brookings jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Bauer hit Schneider home with a double and then he scored on a single from Winston Plummer.

Spearfish tied the game in the top of the fourth. The first run of the inning came from a single and then a sacrifice fly made it 2-2.

Antonen would hit Bauer home with a single in the fifth to give the Bandits the lead. Jay Harris then came home on a Fridrich single and Antonen scored on a double play to make it 5-2 heading into the sixth. 

Christopherson would hit Kahler home with a bunt-single in the sixth to make it 6-2. Christopherson then scored on a single from Nolan Wagner and Bauer stole home to make the final 8-2.

The Bandits had 12 hits. Plummer was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Wagner was 1-for-1 with an RBI. Friedrich was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Bauer was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Christopherson and Antonen were each 2-for-4 with an RBI. Jon Kahler was 1-for-2 and Schneider was 1-for-4. Maxten Jensen had an RBI without a hit.

Wagner pitched the first six innings and gave up two earned runs on one hit with four strikeouts and four walks. Talon Hyde got the final three outs and gave up no hits.
