Strong pitching leads Chutes to doubleheader sweep

BROOKINGS – The Brookings Junior Legion Chutes swept a doubleheader with Brandon Valley on Wednesday night at Bob Shelden Field.

It was the second doubleheader sweep in as many nights for the Chutes. They won game one 6-2 and then came away with a 7-0 victory in game two.

Brookings is now 13-6 and will play a doubleheader in Brookings against Renner on July 10 at 5 p.m.

Game One 

Brookings 6, Brandon Valley 2

Brookings led 3-1 at the end of the first inning and held off Brandon Valley the rest of the way in game one.

Brandon Valley scored a run on a double in the top of the first.

Nolan Krogman and Jude Meendering hit singles to lead off the bottom of the inning and then Noah Lease was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Krogman came home on a sacrifice fly from Baker Hanson. Lease advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Ben Schulte but Meendering was out on the play. Connor Jones then hit Lease and Schulte home with a single to make it 3-1.

That score would remain until the bottom of the top of the third when Brandon Valley hit an RBI single to cut the lead to 3-2.

Brookings pushed the lead back to two in the bottom of the fifth. Hanson walked to open the inning but then was thrown out at second on a fielder’s choice from Schulte. Schulte advanced to second and third on wild pitches and then scored on another wild pitch to make it 4-2.

The Bombers then scored two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Meendering and Lease each walked with one out. Meendering made his way to third after tagging up on a fly out and then came home on a steal of home. Schulte then hit Lease home with a single to make it 6-2.

Brandon Valley had one runner reach in the final half inning but Sutton Schneider forced the next batter into a fly out to end the game.

Brookings had eight hits. Jones was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Schulte was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Meendering was 3-for-3 and Tate Sonnenburg was 1-for-2. Korgman was 1-for-4. Hanson had an RBI without a hit.

Lease pitched the first six and two thirds innings and gave up two runs, one earned, on five hits with seven strikeouts and three walks.

Game Two

Brookings 7, Brandon Valley 0

Krogman pitched a complete-game no hitter for the Bombers in game two and he had 12 strikeouts and four walks. 

Brookings broke a 0-0 tie with three runs in the bottom of the third. Parker Witte was hit by a pitch to lead off and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Krogman. Meendering was then hit by a pitch and Hanson hit a two-out single to load the bases up. Schulte then came to the plate and cleared the bases with a double to make it 3-0.

The Bombers extended the lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth. Jones hit a lead-off single and Sonnenburg followed with a double. Witte then hit both runners home with a double to make it a five-run game.

Hanson was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the fifth and Schulte followed with a single. Hanson scored on a sacrifice fly from Dixon Dauer and Schulte came home on the throw to make it 7-0.

Krogman hit the lead-off batter in the top of the seventh and walked another with two outs. However, he bounced back by striking out the final batter of the game.

The Chutes had nine hits in the win. Schulte was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Witte was 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Meendering was 2-for-2 and Diers was 1-for-1. Hanson was 1-for-2 and Krogman and Sonnenburg were each 1-for-3. Dauer had two RBIs without a hit.
