WHITE — The rising sun might have been a factor in a Monday morning crash on state Highway 30 just east of White that led to injuries and three destroyed vehicles.
Jace Bennett, 32, of White was taken by ambulance to the emergency room at Brookings Health System for unknown injuries, according to a Tuesday news release from the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office. Two other people — John Gallus, 59, of Waverly, Minnesota, and Annaliese Goehring, 22, of Mound City — were treated at the scene.
The incident occurred at 7:32 a.m. on Highway 30 near 480th Avenue, Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring wrote.
Bennett was driving eastbound on Highway 30 when he entered the westbound lane for an unknown reason, possibly because of the intense morning sun, according to Sebring. Once in the westbound lane, his vehicle, a 2016 Chevy K1500, struck the front of a westbound 2022 Chevy Silverado driven by Gallus. The head-on collision caused both vehicles to scatter large amounts of debris on the roadway. Sebring said a third vehicle, a 2015 Chevy Impala driven by Goehring, was following the westbound pickup when the collision occurred. A large piece of debris struck her Impala, disabling it instantly.
“All vehicles were destroyed in the collision and towed from the scene,” Sebring wrote, adding that the total damage estimate is estimated at $97,083.
