ELKTON — The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office investigated a verbal threat against the Elkton School District on Thursday evening before quickly concluding the threat was not credible. Classes in Elkton were not disrupted.

According to a Friday news release from the sheriff’s office, the threat was reported shortly after 7 p.m. Sheriff’s deputies investigated and determined it had come from Lincoln County, Minn. The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office was then notified and also assisted in the investigation.

Investigators concluded no credible threat existed, but declined to provide names and other specific information in order to protect the identities of juveniles involved in the incident. The releases states, “After investigating the incident, deputies have no remaining concern of any threats remaining from this incident.”

Elkton Superintendent Brian Jandahl issued a statement to parents Thursday night assuring them, “there is no active threat to the school at this time” and “we are continuously working to ensure a safe and secure environment for students and staff.”

Reached for comment Friday morning, Jandahl declined to provide additional details, but said school was proceeding normally that day. He also thanked law enforcement for their prompt response.”

“We definitely appreciate their support in helping deal with these situations,” Jandahl said.
