BROOKINGS — The Brookings girls’ soccer team fell to Sioux Falls Washington 6-0 on Tuesday night.
“It just seemed like anything that could go wrong did,” Brookings head coach Adam Juba said. “Nothing really went in our favor (Tuesday night) and we just didn’t play our best. We know that we’re a better team than what we showed (Tuesday night).”
Elizabeth Morgan got the scoring going for the Warriors just over five minutes into the game as she headed one into the back of the net on a corner kick. 15 minutes later Sarah Pirrung shot one over the keeper’s head from the top of the box to put Washington up 2-0. The Warriors would score one more goal before halftime as Isabella Messenbrink kicked it in off another corner to make it 3-0 heading into halftime.
Washington’s next goal came with just over 20 minutes left in the game as Gracyn Dubisar got the ball on the left side of the box and then made a move to get past the keeper and put it into the back of the net. Dubisar scored another goal just over a minute later as she moved from the middle of the box to the left and fired it past the keeper to make it 5-0. The Warriors final goal of the game came with eight and half minutes left as Dubisar sent a free kick into the box and it found the head of Sophie Pueppke before finding the back of the net to make the final 6-0.
The Warriors outshot the Bobcats 10-4 on Tuesday night.
Brookings had won four straight matches heading into Tuesday night’s matchup with the Warriors. Juba said Tuesday was a tough loss but the Bobcats will have to get over it quickly as they head to Pierre on Thursday.
“Everytime we have a hard loss I tell them, ‘let’s be sad tonight, but tomorrow’s a new day and let’s wake up and shake it off and look forward.’ We’re going to try to take down Pierre and that’s a hard environment to play in, so we have to have our heads right before we go there,” Juba said.
Juba said the difference during the win streak was the ‘Cats were being more aggressive.
“I think everything was clicking [during the win streak] and everything was going in our favor. We were moving the ball well. Tonight we just looked a little flay in the attacking part of the field. We were moving the ball well but we weren’t looking quite as aggressive,” Juba said.
Brookings sits in 16th place with just one game left. The top 16 make it to the state playoffs and Juba said he felt pretty confident that his team would be able to make it. However, a win over Pierre would certainly clinch a spot in the playoffs and would give his team a lot of momentum again.
“We know Pierre’s a good team and so our goal is to see if we can come out with a positive result. If we could come out of [that game] with a tie or win that will give us a lot of confidence and push us in the right direction,” Juba said.
