William Henry Everding Jr. was born in Watertown, SD on May 21, 1955 to William and Bertha (Lau) Everding. Bill grew up on the family farm in the Hayti area and graduated from Castlewood High School in 1973. Bill continued his education at Dakota State College in Madison, SD where he worked in the Business Office until earning his bachelor’s degree in Education in 1976. He furthered his education at South Dakota State University, earning his Master’s degree in Education in 1978. He married Mary Brekke on Aug. 26, 1977, in Watertown, SD at Grace Lutheran Church.
Bill started his teaching career at Brookings High School in 1976. He received the Outstanding Young Educator award in 1987. In addition to being an outstanding educator, he proved to be a highly successful coach of Powderpuff football. In 2005, he transferred to Mickelson Middle School, where he taught until he retired in 2012. During the 2005-06 school year, Bill and Mary were happy to host an international exchange student from Germany, Jana Tews. His vocation and true passion was farming and he loved the smell of freshly turned soil or a mowed field of alfalfa. To this day, the John Deere model B that he used as a kid still putters like it did in the 30’s.
Growing up, Bill enjoyed playing basketball and he later picked up tennis. He enjoyed watching his favorite sports teams including the Minnesota Vikings, Minnesota Twins, South Dakota State University Jackrabbits, and Brookings Bobcats. Bill was a loving and caring father and grandfather who enjoyed attending the sporting events and activities of his children and grandchildren, and always watched out for and cared for his family. Throughout the years, Bill and his family attended Our Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church where he and Mary were members. He served on the church council and on the Brookings Parks and Rec Board. In 1981, he was selected as an Outstanding Young Man of America. He was a true conversationalist.
Bill is survived by his wife of 46 years, Mary Everding; 4 children, Duane (Tammy Fraser) Everding of North Carolina, Sarah (Daniel) Chan of Illinois, David (Kelly) Everding of Sioux Falls, SD, and Amy (Bret) Robinson of Arizona; 9 grandchildren, Talon Everding, Tavyn Everding, Kirya Robinson, Nya Robinson, August Everding, Adaline Chan, Lillian Chan, Penelope Chan, and Calvin Chan; sister Darlene (Paul Peterson) Dulitz of Webster, SD, and cousin Diane (Robin) Hayner.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Bertha Everding.
