Brookings splits doubleheaders at Bob Shelden

The Brookings Bobcats split four games over the weekend, winning a game in a doubleheader with Yankton on Saturday and Tea on Sunday.

The Bobcats are now 11-10 on the season and will host O’Gorman for a doubleheader at Bob Shelden Field beginning at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Brookings splits doubleheaders at Bob Shelden

BROOKINGS — The Brookings Bobcats split four games over the weekend, winning a game in a doubleheader with Yankton on Saturday and Tea on Sunday.

The Bobcats are now 11-10 on the season and will host O’Gorman for a doubleheader at Bob Shelden Field beginning at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Saturday

Game 1: Brookings 7, Yankton 6

The Bobcats started the weekend on a positive note when Addison Ronning scored on a walk-off error in Saturday’s doubleheader with Yankton.

Brookings got on the board when Owen Schneider was hit by a pitch, stole second base and scored on an error in the bottom of the first inning and the Bobcats added two more runs when Jack Merritt was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Jase Bauer drew a bases-loaded walk to go ahead 3-0.

The Bobcats’ bats continued to roll in the top of the second inning as Nolan Miles led off with a single and advanced to third base on a wild pitch before scoring on an RBI single by Tate Helmbolt. Helmbolt advanced to third base on a pair of fielder’s choices later in the innings and scored on Tane Friedrich’s RBI single to put the Bobcats up 5-0.

Yankton got on the board in the top of the third inning with RBI singles from Owen Wishon and Samuel Gokie and Tate Beste drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to make it a 5-4 game in the top of the fourth inning.

The Bobcats added some breathing room when Miles was hit by a pitch and advanced to third base on an error by Yankton pitcher Christian Weier and scored on a sacrifice fly by Helmbolt before a two-run double by Kaden Hughes tied the game at 6-6 in the top of the seventh inning.

Ronning led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a double before advancing to third base on a passed ball and after Tyson Antonen and Merritt walked, Bauer hit a ground ball and reached on an error that allowed Ronning to score the game-winning run.
Antonen made the start for Brookings, allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits and four walks with seven strikeouts over 6.1 innings. Helmbolt finished the game, allowing two hits and a walk while getting the final two outs of the seventh inning.

Miles went 1-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Helmbolt went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Schneider walked with a pair of stolen bases and a run scored. David Brink went 1-for-4 with two runs scored. Ronning went 1-for-2 with a double and two runs scored.

Friedrich went 1-for-2 with an RBI and Bauer went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a walk. Antonen and Merritt also drew walks in the win.

Game 2: Yankton 2, Brookings 0

The Bucks earned the split by winning a low-scoring nightcap on Saturday afternoon.

Yankton struck first when Mark Kathol and Kael Garry hit back-to-back doubles to score the Bucks’ first run in the top of the second inning and added an insurance run on Trey Sager’s RBI double in the top of the fifth inning.

In between, Miles was strong on the mound, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks with four strikeouts. Gokie earned the win for Yankton allowing six hits and a walk with six strikeouts over seven shutout innings.

Schneider, Brink, Merritt, Antonen and Austin Clark each went 1-for-3 in the loss with Clark and Antonen stealing a base. Friedrich also stole a base after going 1-for-2 with a walk.

Sunday

Game 1: Brookings 10, Tea 0

The Bobcats bats backed up a strong start by Clark to take the opening game of Sunday’s doubleheader from the Titans.

Helmbolt drew a one-out walk in the top of the first inning before advancing to third on a single by Ronning with two outs and scoring on an error by Tea pitcher Sam Werdel.

Brookings extended its lead in the bottom of the second when Friedrich was hit by a pitch and Bauer and Merritt delivered back-to-back singles to load the bases. Antonen drew a bases-loaded walk in the following at-bat before Miles drove in a run on a sacrifice fly and Schneider delivered a two-run double to put the Bobcats up 5-0.

The Bobcats put together another big inning in the bottom of the fourth when Miles led off with a walk and stole second base. Schneider drew a one-out walk before Ronning drove in Miles with a single to make it a 6-0 game.

Schneider scored on a wild pitch in the following at-bat and Friedrich drove in two runs with a single to make but Brooking up 9-0. Friedrich scored on a defensive indifference later in the fourth inning and that would be enough for Clark who allowed one hit and three walks with five strikeouts over five shutout innings.

Friedrich went 2-for-2 with two RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base. Ronning went 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored and two stolen bases. Schneider went 1-for-2 with a double, two RBI, a run scored and a walk. Bauer went 1-for-3 with a run scored an Merritt went 1-for-2 with a run scored. Antonen and Helmbolt each drew two walks while Miles drew a walk with an RBI and a run scored.

Game 2: Tea 8, Brookings 2

The Titans scored first on a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth inning and took a 2-0 lead when Werdel scored before an inning-ending double play.

The Bobcats rallied with an RBI double by Brink and an error that allowed Ronning to score in the bottom of the fourth inning but Tea area broke the game open by scoring six runs in the top of the seventh inning.

The Titans took the lead when Tim Halbur scored on a steal of home and Mason Schramm drove in another run on a single to make it 4-2. Ethan Vis drove in a run with a double in the next at-bat and Werdel drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk before Teagan Dedula drove in the final run on a single.

Schneider allowed two earned runs on one hit and five walks with seven strikeouts over six innings before Helmbolt allowed six runs (five earned) on six hits and a walk with a strikeout in one inning.

Miles went 1-for-4 while Helmbolt went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored. Ronning went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Brink went 1-for-3 with an RBI double. Friedrich had an RBI and Bauer went 1-for-3. Antonen walked once and Will Conrad had a stolen base.
