Sioux Valley students complete mural inspired by veteran

The spring 2024 painting class at Sioux Valley recently completed a collaborative mural at Sioux Valley School District in Volga.

The imagery for the collaborative mural was inspired by the Corporal Kenneth L. DeGroot Memorial Bridge on the eastbound Big Sioux River Bridge on U.S. Highway 14 between Volga and Brookings. The mural is located in the connecting hallway between the elementary and high school wing, adjacent to the exit door A3 and Mr. Snaza’s classroom. The mural acts as a “bridge” between the buildings, and is about 6 feet in height and 18 feet in length.

“I have had this idea for a few years, and it was the right time and worked perfectly with my painting class to achieve this project. My students were up for the creative challenge and they exceeded expectations," 6-12 art instructor Michael Aasness said

He continued, “As teachers we are always students, always learning. One part of the collaborative process is that my students become leaders and help guide and instruct others through the creative process. It is amazing to see all of the talents and creativity that is shown through this artwork.”

The class spent a few days in the preliminary drafting process, working from several reference images of the bridge to get the perspective and proportions correct. From start to finish, the mural took about six weeks. The students began work in mid-March and completed the painting on April 19.

“The students and I were extremely excited for this project, as we have not done a collaborative mural project for several years. With the addition of this new mural in 2023-24 school year, I believe that through this artwork we have brought a sense of community and connection within the school, sharing and showcasing student talent throughout the entire school," Aasness said. "I am extremely proud of my students and their hard work and am thankful for this opportunity to share this with the school and community.”
