Bandits take 2 at Gopher Classic

EDINA, Minn. – The Bandits ended the Gopher Classic on a high note after beating Mandan, 8-3, to finish 2-3 for the weekend.

Brookings opened play with a rain-shortened 2-1 win over host Edina on Friday before falling 9-3 to Creighton Prep. On Sunday, Post 74 dropped a 12-2 decision to Eastview Thunder and then lost 5-1 to St. Michael.

The Bandits, 8-15 on the season, play host to Huron on Tuesday in a 6 p.m. contest at Bob Shelden Field.

SUNDAY

• Brookings 8, Mandan 3

After spotting the Chiefs a run in the first inning, Post 74 scored three runs in the second on a pair of walks, a single by Tyler Kreutner, a wild pitch and a Mandan error.

Mandan added a run in the second to get within 3-2, but the Bandits answered with two in the top of the third to go up 5-2. Brady Ammann led off with a double before Ryan McMacken took one for the team and Christian Mediger drew a walk to load the bases. A wild pitch moved everybody up a base, plating Ammann; and then, McMacken scored on Brock Luze’s groundout.

The Chiefs added a run in the fourth, but Brookings closed it out with three runs in the sixth.

Tanner Shepardson hit a leadoff single before Jacob Schoon got on base after being hit by a pitch. Rhett Zelinsky drove in both with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch and then scored on Ammann’s groundout for the final margin.

Tyler Kreutner picked up the win on the mound after giving up three runs – one earned – on five hits and four walks with two strikeouts. Schoon earned the save with three innings of hitless ball as he struck out three.

SATURDAY

• St. Michael 5, Brookings 1

The Mikes built a 5-0 lead before Brookings’ came alive in the seventh to score a run before leaving the bases loaded with the tying run at the plate.

In the seventh, McMacken took one for the team with one out before Luze and Shepardson singled to load the bases. Schoon plated McMacken with a two-out single, but that would be the only run the Bandits could push across.

Zelinsky suffered the loss after giving up five runs – three earned – on six hits and three walks with three strikeouts over four innings. Jameson Meyer tossed two innings and allowed one hit and two walks with two strikeouts while Ammann gave up one hit and one walk in the seventh.

Eastview took advantage of five walks to go along with five hits – two for extra bases – to plate eight runs in the bottom of the first inning to take control.

The Bandits scored twice in the fourth when Schoon led off with a walk and then Justin Devine, Ammann and McMacken hit three singles in a row to make it 8-2.

Eastview put up four in the bottom of the fourth to end the game early via the run rule.

Luze suffered the loss after giving up eight earned runs on four hits and five walks. McMacken came on in the first and allowed four runs – three earned – on five hits and two walks with one strikeout in four innings of relief.

FRIDAY

• Creighton 9, Brookings 3

The Bandits got on the scoreboard first when McMacken and Justin Devine drew back-to-back walks before Ammann’s double plated McMacken for a 1-0 lead through two innings.

But Creighton scored three runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to earn the win as Brookings managed single runs in the fourth and fifth.

Devine singled with one out in the fourth; moved to second on a wild pitch; and scored Shepardson’s two-out single.

In the fifth, Zelinsky reached on catcher’s interference; advanced to second on a wild pitch; went to third on a Rykhus fielder’s choice; and then, scored on McMacken’s fielder’s choice.

Rykhus suffered the loss after giving up nine runs – seven earned – on seven hits and five walks with three strikeouts. Luze relieved and got the final out on a flyball to center.

Only one inning was played before the game was called due to rain with the Bandits leading 2-1.

Kreutner led off with a single; moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on Schoon’s base hit. Schoon went to second on the throw to the plate and then scored on Zelinsky’s base hit for the 2-0 lead.

A pair of walks, followed by a double, were good for one run for the home team in the bottom of the first as Zelinsky got out of a bases-loaded jam with a strikeout to preserve the 2-1 lead.
