Bobcats win team crown at Kingsbury County Invitational; five champs

ARLINGTON – Five of Brookings’ seven finalists won titles as the Bobcats took the team crown at the Kingsbury County Invitational on Saturday.

Brookings totaled 192.5 team points.

Parker was second with 157 points and Sisseton ended up third at 152.5.

The host Knights (130.5 points) finished fifth, Flandreau (46) 11th and Sioux Valley (34.5) 12th.

Bobcat senior Jacob Schoon improved to 23-0 while placing first at 182 pounds.

Nolan Archer (126 pounds), Jaxon Bowes (138), Logan Bowes (160) and Gus Miller (220) also finished on top.

Schoon received a double bye before pinning Groton Area’s Grady O’Neill in 1:25 and Kingsbury County’s Gavin Holland in 1:49 in the title bout.

Archer also pinned his way to the crown following an opening bye. He dropped KC’s Tucker Anderson in 53 seconds, Lyman County’s Tance Wagner in 2:20 and Sisseton’s Dane Christopherson in 5:37 in the final.

Jaxon Bowes, following a bye, picked up a 15-0 technical fall in 3:29 against Lyman’s Tristan Penny. He put Sisseton’s Jayden Fryer on his back in 3:35 and then won by fall in 3:28 versus Beresford/Alcester-Hudson’s Payton Borah to take the crown.

Logan Bowes, who also received a bye, tallied a 13-1 major decision over Sioux Falls Washington’s Morgan Warmbein. He pinned Warner/Northwestern’s Easton Steinbech in 2:25 and Beresford/Alcester-Hudson’s Wyatt Knudson in 2:48 to cap the championship run.

After getting a bye, Miller pinned Marion/Freeman’s Connor Koppman in 54 seconds and Flandreau’s Chase Reed in 1:00. He moved to 25-1 on the season with an 11-0 major decision over Sisseton’s Vincent Herberg in the title match.

Brookings’ Connor Klinkhammer (120 pounds) and Luke Rasmussen (170) both finished second.

Klinkhammer cruised into the final by getting a bye, pinning Warner/Northwestern’s Clayton Dulany in 23 seconds and tallying a 14-0 major decision against KC’s Matthew Steffensen.

He forfeited the title match.

Rasmussen got a bye and won via forfeit before pinning Sisseton’s Matthew Moen in 5:47.

Parker’s Tanner Even pinned Rasmussen in 3:01 in the final.

Tucker Christie (285 pounds) placed third.

He received a bye and pinned Groton’s Adrian Knutson in 1:49, but dropped a 3-1 decision to Groton’s Wyatt Locke in the semis.

Christie pinned Sisseton’s Challenge Meng in 42 seconds and edged Flandreau’s Braden Peters 4-3 in the third-place matchup.

Koby Bartels (132 pounds) went 3-2; Gavin Klinkhammer (113) was 1-2; and Jacob Teal (138) and Cherish Stern (145) both ended up 0-2.

Kingsbury County’s Dylan Zell (113), following a bye, picked up a pin and a technical fall to reach the final before getting pinned in 2:48 by Groton’s Dragr Monson.

Holland also had a first-round bye at 182 before winning by forfeit and then recording a major decision.

Alec Dobson (132 pounds), Monte Albrecht (152) and Kain Gilligan (195) each placed third for the Knights.

Dobson pinned Parker’s Kaleb Buseman in 4:58 in the third-place match; Albrecht topped Parker’s Blake Eldeen 3-1; and Gilligan won by fall in 4:16 over Warner/Northwestern’s Dawson Hanson.

Steffensen (120) took fourth.

Flandreau’s Hunter Witte (113 pounds), Chase Reed (220) and Peters (285) each placed fourth.
