Kayden Verley leads C-Hawks past Cossacks

CANTON – Kayden Verley scored four touchdowns – two of which came on punt returns – as Canton beat Sioux Valley 35-6 to open the high school football season Friday night.

He rushed 11 times for 145 yards and a pair of scores.

Verley plunged in from 2 yards out at the 3:56 mark of the opening quarter and the first of his three successful PAT kicks put the C-Hawks ahead 7-0.

Verley then returned a punt 75 yards to the end zone later in the first to push the margin to 14-0.

His second punt return – a 55-yarder – gave Canton a 20-0 advantage with 2:49 left in the half.

Verley got free for an 80-yard touchdown run early in the third. Scott Peterson’s two-point conversion run made it 28-0.

The Cossacks got on the board with 7:23 remaining in the game after Dalton Hanson ran one in from 14 yards out.

Canton’s Cody Soderquist scored on an 8-yard run and Verley added the PAT kick with 2:24 to go to provide for the final margin.

Sioux Valley’s Tyge Schiller went 9-of-21 for 121 yards. Jaxton Schiller picked up 41 yards on 11 rushes and 51 yards on two receptions.

Hanson ran for 53 yards on 20 attempts. Lane VanderWal tallied two catches covering 39 yards.

The C-Hawks’ Shaeden Sheidt had 14 tackles and Zach Richardson added nine.

The Cossacks’ Tayte White made eight stops and Brayden Havrevold contributed six.

Sioux Valley plays host to Beresford and Canton travels to Chamberlain next week.
