BROOKINGS – After winning the last two Summit League Championship titles, the South Dakota State men's golf team has another tough fall schedule to prepare for a three-peat.
"We are always trying to test ourselves against the best teams," SDSU Director of Golf Casey VanDamme said. "I like our schedule a lot and look forward to getting the season going."
The Jackrabbits open the season at the Badger Invitational in Big Ten country Sept. 10-12. Iowa State took home the 2016 team title, shooting an 852 compared to SDSU's 886.
For the fifth consecutive year, South Dakota State travels to Fort Collins, Colo., for the Ram Masters Intercollegiate on Sept. 18-19. Sophomore-to-be Alejandro Restrepo recorded his first top-20 finish at the event, firing a 5-over-par 215.
South Dakota State again plays host to one of the premier tournaments in the Midwest in The Jackrabbit on Oct. 1-3 in Valentine, Neb. The Jacks played against an elite field that included seven ranked teams and a pair of top-50 golfers last season. Junior-to-be Jaxon Lynn had his best finish of the year, tying for fourth with a 6-under par 210.
SDSU makes its seventh appearance at the Bill Ross Intercollegiate in Kansas City on Oct. 8-10. The Jackrabbits' best finish came in 2006-07, placing fifth.
The Jackrabbits make a return trip to the FGCU Classic in Florida on Oct. 29-30. The tournament is played at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Old Corkscrew Golf Club. Then-No. 42 Eastern Kentucky won the 16-team event last year.
The Summit League has had four teams – Northern Illinois, Oral Roberts, Troy and Western Illinois – win three or more titles consecutive since 1983. The Leathernecks won three championships twice and were the most recent team with the three-peat from 2006 to 2008.
