BROOKINGS – A man was arrested after he allegedly attempted to strangle a woman over the weekend, according to Brookings Police.
It was reported shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday and occurred in the 800 block of Fifth Street South, said Lt. Derrick Powers.
“We were called to a complex down there after a neighbor could hear a male and female fighting in a residence,” Powers said.
Officers talked to a 41-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman, both Brookings residents.
“It was reported that during an argument, the male had pushed the female to the ground and pushed her and threw a bike on her. He attempted to strangle her by putting his hands around her throat and squeezing,” Powers said.
The man was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault and transported to the Brookings County Detention Center. Alcohol was a factor, Powers said.
“The male resisted officers as they attempted to bring him into the detention center, so he was also charged with resisting arrest,” Powers said, adding the man also resisted while at the detention center.
The woman did not receive medical attention at the time of the call, he added.
