Awful ‘afterpay’

The other day I received an email from one of the companies I deal with online. They wanted me to know that they have started a program called “Afterpay.” The idea is that I can buy now and pay later.

This made me think of the passage in Heb 11:24-25: "By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter; Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season.Moses came to a point in his life when he made a choice. It is interesting though, when we look at what his choices were. In the very next verse it says “Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.”

So, if you examine his options, you will note that they are the same ones we are faced with today: pleasure or pleasure. Did you notice that? On one hand, he had the pleasures of sin, on the other hand he had the pleasures of rewards everlasting. Pleasure or pleasure. Here’s the thing though; sin will give you pleasure but it will only last for a season. And that season is so much shorter than most people reckon it will be. But Satan has set it up so conveniently for us. He has established an “Afterpay” system. You can sin now and pay later. You see, the pleasures of sin are short-lived – that is true – but what traps so many of us, is that the pleasures are immediate.

But, oh dear friend, even with “Afterpay” the bill will come due. In the end, sin will bring much misery and death. Rom 6:23 "For or the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. The devil is a liar and wants to destroy you." His “Afterpay” system has entrapped so many, do not let it trap you!

On the other hand, God’s pleasures are not always immediate. He wants to build us into the image of his son, He wants to grow us and develop us. Patience comes from trials, the Bible says. Growth comes from difficulty. All good things do not come easy. But oh dear friend, the rewards are out of this world – and they are everlasting.

So let us review your choices: pleasure or pleasure. Which one will you choose? One is immediate, but lasts only for a short season and then “Afterpay” sets in. One is not so immediate, but it is everlasting. Sounds like a no-brainer right? Make the right choice today.
