ESTELLINE – A barn blaze on Thursday morning southeast of Estelline caused an estimated $48,920 in damage and killed goats, chickens and cats, according to a news release from the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
The fire, which occurred at 11 a.m. on 196th Street west of 471st Avenue, had fully engulfed the barn and some round hay bales by the time responding crews arrived, Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring reported. After the flames were doused, it was learned that horses and cattle had escaped – but that wasn’t the case for five goats, 12 chickens and 10 cats. Crews remained at the scene for about three hours.
The cause of the blaze remains unknown, Sebring wrote, and the incident remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office.
Responding agencies included the sheriff’s office, Brookings County Emergency Management, the South Dakota Highway Patrol and fire departments from Brookings, Estelline, Aurora, Bruce, Volga, White, Toronto, Sinai and Elkton.
