BROOKINGS – A theft reported to Brookings Police mirrors another that came to the attention of the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office last week, Lt. Derrick Powers said.
Twelve battery cores were reported stolen at 10 a.m. Monday. They were stolen sometime between Friday evening and Saturday morning while they were sitting outside a business in the 400 block of Third Street, Powers said.
The estimated value of the battery cores is placed at several hundred dollars, he said.
With the Sheriff’s Office reporting the theft of six batteries last week, Powers wants the public to be aware of the situation.
“I don’t know if these are related or not,” but the timing suggests they could be, Powers said.
As to motive, Powers said the thieves could be getting some money for the battery cores.
“I think there’s some money in them when they return them. There’s money in the recycling of whatever’s left in them … depending on the type of core,” he said.
