Coffeehouse tips go to Samaritan’s Purse

BROOKINGS — The Mission of the Month for May at the Mission Coffeehouse at First Lutheran Church is Samaritan’s Purse.

US. Samaritan’s Purse is a nondenominational evangelical Christian organization providing spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world. Since 1970, Samaritan’s Purse has helped meet needs of people who are victims of war, poverty, natural disasters, disease, and famine with the purpose of sharing God’s love through his Son, Jesus Christ.

The organization serves the church worldwide to promote the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. The story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:30-37) gives a clear picture of God’s desire for us to help those in desperate need wherever we find them.

After describing how the Samaritan rescued a hurting man whom others had passed by, Jesus told his hearers, “Go and do likewise.” For over 50 years, Samaritan’s Purse has done our utmost to follow Christ’s command by going to the aid of the world’s poor, sick, and suffering. Disaster Relief teams are currently responding in five locations in the U.S. after deadly tornadoes — Amory and Rolling Fork Mississippi, Little Rock, Arkansas, Covington Tennessee, and Sullivan County Indiana.

Quilters to ‘Tie One On’

BROOKINGS — First Lutheran Church, Brookings, Mission Quilters are hosting a quilting party called “Tie One On” in support of Lutheran World Relief projects. Their goal of 100 mission quilts completed in one day will require support from community members, both men and women as well as middle school age youth and up. All skill levels are welcome as there will be work for those who want to tie, cut material, iron or sew. The quilters say they appreciate those who can bring their own sewing machine.

The event on Saturday, June 10, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. will be held in the First Lutheran Activity Center with a free lunch for those who register. Contact Julie Abraham at 605-690-6292 or j.b.abraham67@gmail.com to sign up for the meal count or for free babysitting as well.

Lutheran World Relief supplies quilts all over the world for disaster relief response. Quilts reach communities where families are struggling to afford to eat, embracing them in God’s love and helping them care for themselves and their families.

Ascension Lutheran hosting grief group

BROOKINGS — If you are grieving the loss of a loved one, you are invited to Touchstone Grief Group, led by the Rev. Stephen Palo at Ascension Lutheran Church in Brookings on Mondays, 6:30-8: p.m., April 17-June 12, 2023.

The group will explore these questions, and those that you bring to the group.

To sign up, call Palo at 605-692-6565 or email stephenp@brookings.net.
