Five-time New York Times best-selling author Bart Ehrman will open the South Dakota State University Speakers Series and launch the South Dakota Festival of Books by sharing “The Greatest Stories Rarely Told: Biblical Scholars and the Discrepancies of Scripture” at 7 p.m. Monday in Larson Memorial Auditorium at the SDSU Performing Arts Center. Tickets are not needed, and the lecture will conclude with a moderated question-and-answer period. Following the lecture, Ehrman will sign his books.

The Brookings Public Library will host a showing of the newest Great American Read episode at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17.

Sioux Valley homecoming coronation starts at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17, at the Sioux Valley Performing Arts Center in Volga.

Brookings High School’s homecoming coronation is set for 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17, in Jostad Gym. That will be followed by the Burning of the B at about 8:15 p.m. in the southeast BHS parking lot.

Tuesday, Sept. 18

As a pre-South Dakota Festival of Books event, a special screening of “The Lovely Bones” with an introduction by local filmmaker Jay Fishback will be held from 1-3:45 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, at Brookings Cinema 8. The Brookings Public Library will host a free screening of “The Lovely Bones” starting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, as part of its Great American Read programming.

Neal Rock, the 2018 Stuart Artist-in-Residence at the South Dakota State University School of Design, will present a public lecture starting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, in the South Dakota Art Museum auditorium.

Brookings author Phyllis Cole-Dai will present “The Stories Behind the Story,” a revealing look at the 1862 U.S.-Dakota War and the historical novel she based upon it, from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. Along with the presentation, the public is invited to enjoy coffee and dialogue. A book-signing will follow.

Wednesday, Sept. 19

1 Million Cups, a way for creators, artists, entrepreneurs and business owners to gather and share ideas on upcoming projects or new products, will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. Free coffee will be served.

Thursday, Sept. 20

The next Third Thursday at McCrory Gardens is set for Sept. 20. A free Autumn in the Gardens Tour is set for 10 a.m., and Brett Owens will present “Local Foods: Growing Vegetables at SDSU” at 6:30 p.m.

If you love to paint, join the painting group that meets from noon-5 p.m. every Thursday at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. Come work on individual projects and collaborate on art talk and ideas. No pre-registration is needed.

The Brookings Interfaith Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 726 Sixth St., Brookings. A potluck meal will be followed by a broad-ranging discussion regarding “The Islamic Jesus.” Bring a potluck dish to pass, if possible. Members of a combined Muslim-Christian study group will share insights they gained after reading “The Islamic Jesus: How the King of the Jews Became a Prophet of the Muslims,” about Jesus as portrayed in the Quran.

Jenny Rogers, assistant editor of The Washington Post’s outlook section, will deliver a talk, “The Enemy of the American People: Working as a journalist when half the country doesn’t trust you,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, at the South Dakota Art Museum. The talk is free and open to the public.

The Brookings Library Puppeteers will host their next puppet show starting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20. All are invited to come enjoy the family friendly show.

The South Dakota Festival of Books will host a fundraiser and author reception from 7:30-9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, in the Woster Celebration Hall at the SDSU Alumni Center. Tickets, $50 apiece, are required. Mingle with festival authors and enjoy hors d’ouvres from Aramark Catering. Each ticket includes one free drink, then cash bar. Friday, Sept. 21

The South Dakota Festival of Books continues at 9 a.m. Friday with a full day of events at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota, Brookings K-12 schools and the SDSU campus. Workshops are also scheduled at the Brookings City & County Government Center, the Brookings Public Library and at the First United Methodist Church. Attendees should head to the Community Life Center, First United Methodist Church, at 1 p.m. for the opening of Exhibitors’ Hall and the “Early Bird” Mass Book Signing, 3:30-4:15 p.m. The evening’s keynotes at the Larson Memorial Concert Hall include a talk by 2018 One Book South Dakota author Thomas E. Saturday, Sept. 22

The South Dakota Festival of Books continues at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, when the Exhibitors’ Hall opens. Sessions will take place in the Downtown and Central Historic Districts, including at the Brookings City & County Government Center, the Brookings Public Library, Children’s Museum, Brookings Activity Center, Brookings Arts Council and First United Methodist Church. The afternoon includes another Mass Book Signing in Exhibitors’ Hall at 1 p.m., and the evening features keynotes in the sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church –”American Wolf” author Nate Blakeslee at 5:30 p.m. followed by a panel on the evolution of coverage of tough topics by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists Timothy Egan and Jacqui Banaszynski at 7 p.m. Find a full schedule of events at http://sdhumanities.org/festival-of-books/.

SDSU’s School of Performing Arts will hold Piano Day 2018 from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Sept. 22, in the Lincoln Music Hall on campus. This free annual learning event is intended for piano students in sixth through 12th grade. No advance preparation is required, but students are asked to bring a piece to play. School and private music teachers are also encouraged to attend. To register, email john.walker@sdstate.edu or call 688-5187. Students and teachers can also register from 8:30-9 a.m. Sept. 22. Refreshments will be provided.

The fall edition of Junk Jam will be held from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Swiftel Center holding barn. Early bird admission is $15 from 9-10 a.m., and general admission is $5 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Come enjoy vintage, handmade and eclectic finds, food trucks, live music and cocktails.

The Brookings Arts Council will host a Watercolor Techniques Class from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at 524 Fourth St. Learn incredible watercolor techniques from one of the top watercolorists in the state. Sunday, Sept. 23

The Pioneer Lutheran Church Fall Festival is set for Sunday, Sept. 23, at the church 4 miles west of White and 2 1/2 miles north on 474th Avenue. The event includes music by Matt Holler at 3:30 p.m., games at 3:30 p.m., a meal from 4:30-6 p.m. and an auction at 6 p.m. The menu includes a pork sandwich, chips, beans, sweet corn, salad, pie and a drink for $8 per plate for adults and $5 for kids’ plates. Proceeds go to the Pioneer Cemetery Fund.

David Reynolds, director of SDSU’s School of Performing Arts and professor of music, will present a faculty recital at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, in the Lincoln Music Hall’s Peterson Recital Hall. All are invited to attend this free event. For more information, call 688-5187.
