BROOKINGS – Achievement Days got its start in Brookings County Monday with set-up and interviews, but the 4-H action really revs up Wednesday and Thursday.

That’s when the public is invited to come out to the Brookings County Resource Center and the Swiftel Center to see students’ livestock, projects and other exhibits that represent a year of hard work.

“This is a great way to come out and support the youth in the Brookings area,” said 4-H program adviser Sonia Mack. “We invite people to come see their projects and what 4-H has to offer.”

Tuesday kicked off with 4-H’ers entering food and horticulture exhibits and continuing interviews this morning. Livestock check-in is from 6-9 p.m. tonight.

Wednesday is when the official shows will start. At 8 a.m. is the swine show along with the 4-H exhibits opening. The dairy cattle and dairy goat show will start at 10:30 a.m., and after that is the beef fitting contest/parade at 1 p.m. at the Swiftel Center holding barn. The cat show and cattle parade/winner selection will be announced at 1:30 p.m. at Swiftel Center Arena, with the beef show following at 2 p.m.

Rounding out Wednesday is a companion animal show at 4 p.m., rabbit show at 5 p.m. and a poultry show at 6 p.m. The 4-H buildings will close at 9 p.m. The night will close with a dance party in the Swiftel Center concourse at 8:30 p.m. and run until 10 p.m.

Thursday action starts with an 8 a.m. meat goat show and all goat showmanship afterward, along with 4-H exhibits opening. The sheep show starts at 9:30 a.m.

Mack said the sheep show is the event in which the most kids participate. Anywhere from 10 to 30 kids will be in one event with a total of about 300 4-H members competing.

The public is invited to a pork loin barbecue from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the Swiftel Center that includes sandwich, baked beans, chips, ice cream and drink.

The Fashion Revue and Good Neighbor Award begin at 6 p.m., and the Round Robin Showmanship and the 4-H graduation ceremony are at 7 p.m.

Mack said that Thursday night draws the largest crowd, especially with the BBQ feed.

Buildings close and check out, clean up and take down will start at 8 p.m.
