BROOKINGS – Jack Mohlenhoff and David Moklebust will present an organ recital on First Lutheran Church’s Schantz/Salmen organ at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 7.
The church is located at Eighth Street and Main Avenue in Brookings.
The organists will be joined by percussionist Cathy Moklebust and trumpeters Michael Bailey and Aaron Bartz in a program that showcases the organ as a solo instrument, ensemble instrument and leader of the people’s song.
Mohlenhoff is a Brookings native and was music director at First Lutheran from 1980-1982. He was a high school student here when the organ was installed in 1973. He is now minister of music and arts at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Sioux Falls.
David Moklebust was director of music at First Lutheran following Mohlenhoff’s time here. Cathy Moklebust is also a Brookings native who grew up at First Lutheran.
Dave and Cathy recently moved back to Brookings and together operate Moklebust Music Services, editing and setting music scores for a number of music publishers. Cathy is also a nationally known composer and conductor of handbell music.
Composers represented in the Sunday program include J.S. Bach, Buxtehude, Vivaldi and Brahms.
Brookings Community Music School is sponsoring the event, and a free-will offering will benefit the school.
