BROOKINGS – The ‘Chutes dropped their opener against Renner but came back with a win in the nightcap to earn a split with the Kings in Junior American Legion baseball action on Monday at Bob Shelden Field.

The visitors jumped out to an 8-5 lead through three innings on the way to a 10-7 triumph in Game 1; but Brookings used an eight-run second inning in Game 2 to power to a 14-7 five-inning win.

The ‘Chutes travel to Fargo this weekend for a tournament. They begin play at noon on Friday.

The Kings put up four runs in the first inning and then tacked on two runs in the second, third and seventh to earn the win despite the ‘Chutes out-hitting Renner, 9-8.

Parker Beers had three hits as Tanner Shepardson hit safely twice and drove in two runs. Brock Luze also picked up a pair of RBIs while Trevor Berreth scored a pair of runs to go along with a base hit.

Christian Mediger and Theo Burns had a hit and RBI apiece as Caden McKeown singled, as well.

Mediger suffered the loss as he gave up seven runs – three earned – on five hits and two walks with one strikeout in two innings of work.

Berreth threw three innings of middle relief and allowed one run on five walks with two strikeouts.

Rhett Zelinsky closed the game and gave up two runs – neither earned – on three hits with two Ks.

The Kings stayed hot with four first-inning runs and led 5-3 before the ‘Chutes sent 12 batters to the plate in bottom of the second to plate eight runs for an 11-5 edge.

With two outs and Zelinsky on base thanks to a Renner error, Beers, Shepardson and Parker Rykhus furnished three straight hits before walks to Mediger and McKeown reloaded the bases.

Back-to-back errors on balls hit by Luze and Burns were followed up by a wild pitch and a passed ball to account for the ‘Chutes’ runs.

In the fourth, Luze and Burns drew leadoff walks before Zelinsky drove in a run with a base hit. Beers’ sac fly to short right drove in Burns as Zelinsky moved to third before an ensuing error allowed Zelinsky to score as well.

Renner scored two in the top of the fifth but it was too little, too late for the Kings.

Luze earned the win on the mound as he gave up seven runs – four earned – on four hits and four walks with three strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.

Shepardson gave up one hit in relief before getting the final out via a strikeout.

Rykhus drove in three on two hits while Shepardson had a pair of hits and one RBI.
