City waives building permit fees for storm damage

BROOKINGS – The Brookings City Council passed a resolution at Tuesday’s meeting authorizing the waiver of building and sign permit fees for projects related to the May 12 derecho.

The resolution will be in effect for 180 days. It was passed on a unanimous vote.

“People would still be required to get a permit, (but) we would just waive the fee for that permit,” City Manager Paul Briseno said. He added that, “People who have to do just a minor repair to (a) roof do not require a permit, but those who would have to replace an entire roof would be required to (get a) permit.”

Left in the storm’s wake were downed trees, damaged roofs and siding and even the collapse of some structures in Brookings and the surrounding area.

According to the National Weather Service office in Sioux Falls, widespread straight-line winds between 50 and 70 mph were reported on May 12, with smaller areas of 80 to 100 mph winds.  The highest wind gusts reported included a measured 107 mph gust in Tripp, 97 mph wind gust in Madison and a 90 mph wind gust in Huron.
