BROOKINGS – The Mission of the Month for June is Puerto Rico mission projects.
In 2006, First Lutheran Church took a group of 20 young people to Puerto Rico to engage in mission work – feeding the hungry, visiting the elderly, and providing labor for those who needed help.
By the grace of God, that trip opened a relationship that has lasted over 13 years. The church has grown in connections – personal and faithful – in worship and work together.
In 2017, when Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico, it took months to reconnect. When church officials did finally reconnect, they asked for volunteers to come and help them rebuild. Last summer a church crew went to clean up and seal roofs in the community of San Lorenzo.
They have reached out again – much work remains to be done. This fall the church mission team will go to Puerto Rico again. The tip jar this month will go toward the projects that it will engage in. All travel expenses will be covered by the participants – tip jar money will be committed to projects only.
