SIOUX FALLS — South Dakota State third baseman Nic Nelson was named Monday as TicketSmarter Summit League Peak Performer of the Week, one day following a record-setting performance at the plate.

A senior from Apple Valley, Minnesota, Nelson recorded multiple hits in all three games of a weekend series against Northern Colorado, posting a .667 batting average by going 8-for-12 with four home runs, eight runs batted in and a 1.750 slugging percentage. He opened the series with a 2-for-4 afternoon at the plate, then hit four home runs in a May 14 doubleheader played in Sioux Falls. He homered once in the first game of the twinbill, then connected on three home runs in Game 2 to become the third player in the Summit League era of Jackrabbit baseball (since 2008) to accomplish that feat. Nelson’s 14 total bases in the series finale are the most by an SDSU player in a Division I game.

Nelson upped his season home run total to 12 and moved into a tie for the team lead with 41 RBIs while raising his batting average to .295.

By winning two of the three games against Northern Colorado, South Dakota State has secured a berth in next week’s Summit League Baseball Championship. The Jackrabbits, 21-23 overall and 12-9 in The Summit League, close out regular season play this week with a game Tuesday night at Minnesota, followed by a three-game league series Thursday through Saturday at North Dakota State.
