Cossacks win Region 2A opener

VOLGA – Lynsey Stevens dropped in 33 points and Sioux Valley got on a roll early during a 78-43 defeat of Deuel in the first round of the Region 2A Girls’ Basketball Tournament on Tuesday.

The Cossacks shot a blistering 73.3 percent (22-of-30) in the opening half. They were up 24-12 after a quarter and 56-24 at halftime, meaning the clock was running the entire second half.

“We started out with great pace,” said Sioux Valley coach Jamie Granum. “We wanted to create tempo with our defense. If I’m Deuel, they wanted a 30-35 possession game; we wanted 55 possessions. … We knew defensively we had to create some things, but also with that we knew we’d give up some layups. And I was probably the most frustrated about giving up layups, and it was my game plan so I have to live with that.

“We survived and I wrote on the board one of our goals was to empty Volga, Bruce and Sinai on March 8 (state tournament), so hopefully we can get to that point.”

Stevens went 15-of-23 from the field and 3-of-5 at the foul line.

Miakken Vincent finished 6-of-10 from 3-point range for 18 points.

Cassie Rawden had 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting.

Carly Granum contributed nine points. The senior hit three 3s to extend her single-season state-record total to 120. She has 335 in her career.

Sioux Valley ended up shooting 56.4 percent (31-of-55), including a 10-of-20 mark from downtown.

Perri Liedtke scored four points off the bench and Rachel Miller added a bucket.

For the Cardinals (4-17), Jaydyn TeGantvoort finished with 22 points and Britney Lovre added 12.

Sioux Valley (14-7) heads to Flandreau (13-7) in the semifinals Thursday at 7 p.m.

The Fliers beat the Cossacks 56-45 on Feb. 2.
