BROOKINGS – Brookings County commissioners approved the county’s 2022 budget on Tuesday. The budget total comes to nearly $32.3 million and will go into effect on Jan. 1.
The provisional 2022 budget that was passed at a previous meeting was amended as well, paving the way for the approval of next year’s budget this week.
According to Commission Director Stacey Steffensen, the provisional budget was tweaked with the addition of utility and growth numbers, which resulted in minor changes to the final budget.
Steffensen said at Tuesday’s meeting that the changes did decrease the property tax levy slightly. It’s set at 4.202 per $1,000 in valuation for 2022.
The 2022 budget is slightly larger than 2021’s, which came to nearly $32 million.
One of the major differences in the 2022 budget is the increase in money spent on public safety. In 2021, the county was budgeted to spend $3,886,422 from the general fund on public safety. In 2022, the county is slated to spend $4,554,074 in the general fund on public safety. The increases are for the county jail and Enhanced 911.
The county plans to spend significantly less on juvenile detention in the 2022 budget. The 2022 budget also shows that the county is slated to spend $67,500 more than in 2021 on Drainage Commission.
Other significant changes include a reduction on spending for the bridge and road fund for the 2022 budget. In 2021, the county was budgeted at $8,279,025 on the bridge and road fund. In the 2022 budget, the county is slated to spend $7,266,808. The county is also slated to spend more on domestic abuse and less on welfare in the 2022 budget.
The public library will see an increase in county funding in the 2022 budget. In the 2021 budget, the public library received $23,700 in funding; in the 2022 budget, the public library is scheduled to receive $31,200.
