BROOKINGS – The Brookings School District Special Education Department is once again selling T-shirts to raise both awareness and funds for Disability Awareness Week.

Disability Awareness Week will be celebrated March 2-6, but orders from those wishing to purchase T-shirts are due Friday, Feb. 14. Order forms have been sent home with students, and they’re available in school offices.

Orders can also be placed online at https://dakotasportsonline.chipply.com/daw/store.aspx. T-shirts cost $7 or $9, depending on your selection, and online orders will be shipped the school for pick-up.

“This is the third year of t-shirt sales and the second year they are available to the community.  We would love for people in the community to purchase T-shirts and support our message of kindness and inclusion,” Brookings special education teacher Sara Broesder said.  This year Larson’s Manufacturing is generously matching proceeds up to $1,000.  Proceeds raised will be used to help purchase adaptive equipment for school playgrounds, she added.

The week of March 2-6 will highlight different disabilities that are affecting people in schools and communities, and each day will be assigned a color that all K-12 staff and students and community members are encouraged to wear.

They are: Monday – grey for communication disorders and vision and hearing impairments awareness; Tuesday – yellow for dyslexia awareness; Wednesday – blue, including the fundraiser T-shirts, for autism awareness; Thursday – black for intellectual and physical disabilities awareness; and Friday – red for emotional disabilities awareness.
