Elkton sweeps Bullets in 16U action

ELKTON – The home team swept the Bullets, winning 15-5 in six innings and 8-4 in nine.

Brookings (7-11) plays a twinbill at Renner on Wednesday at 1 p.m.

Elkton (7-1) is host to Canova for another DH Monday at 5 p.m.

Game 1

 Elkton 15, Brookings 5 (6 inn.)

Jack Hemmen (two hits) and Sam Nibbe both drove in three runs to lead Elkton, which pulled away from a tie game with three runs in the fifth and seven in the sixth.

Jacob Timm doubled twice. Aiden Erickson had two singles and an RBI as he and Ryan Krog both scored three times.

Krog earned the win after allowing five runs – two earned – on three hits with seven strikeouts and a pair of walks in four innings. Riley Hunter tossed two scoreless frame to pick up the save, striking out three and walking one.

The Bullets’ Nathan Lease tallied a two-run double and Jaxton Eck added a one-run double.

Aidan Stewart, Carter Wright and Andrew Bishop contributed hits.

Lease gave up eight runs – four earned – on seven hits with five strikeouts and a walk in five innings.

Game 2

Elkton scored five runs in the top of the ninth to complete the sweep.

Jack Hemmen was 3-for-5 with an RBI. Austin Johnson (two RBI), Erickson (RBI), Nibbe (RBI) and Logan Kuehl each added a pair of hits.

Nibbe picked up the victory in relief after giving up one run – unearned – on a hit and a pair of walks with two strikeouts over the final two frames.

Johnson threw seven innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts.

Stewart was 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI.

Bishop finished 2-for-3. Lease and Izaya Bangs Dandurand both had a hit and an RBI.

Wright chipped in with an RBI, while Zach Struck and Matt Nordmeyer had hits.

Stewart, the starter on the bump, surrendered three runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts in five innings. Pederson tossed the final four and took the loss, giving up five runs on six hits and four walks with four strikeouts.
