If you love to paint, join the painting group that meets from noon-5 p.m. every Thursday at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. Come work on individual projects and collaborate on art talk and ideas. No pre-registration is needed.

Brookings AARP Foundation TaxAide provides free tax return preparation and electronic filing for taxpayers with low to middle incomes, with special attention to those aged 60 or older. Trained volunteers are available from 1-4 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from Jan. 31-April 11 at the lower level of First Bank and Trust, 520 Sixth St., Brookings. Bring Social Security cards, photo ID, last year’s tax return and tax records for 2018. No appointment is necessary. Brookings residents unable to come to the site may call LaVonne Tufty at 692-4766 to make arrangements for tax assistance at their place of residence.

Alpha Psi Omega presents “Capers 2019: Firsts & Lasts” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, in Doner Auditorium. Cost is $12 for general admission and $14 for reserved seats; call the box office at 688-6045. The SNL-style skit show is for mature audiences only.

Friday, Feb. 1

Brookings Radio and Community Blood Bank will host a community blood drive from 7:30-11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 1, at Brookings Radio, 227 22nd Ave. All those donating blood will receive a “Give from the Heart” blood donation T-shirt. All blood donations will stay local for local use with all blood types in immediate need.

Bingo at the Brookings VFW, 520 Main Ave., is from 6:30-10 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1. Cards are handed out at 6:30, and bingo starts at 7. Lunch will be available. For more information, call 692-6771.

The Brookings Regional Humane Society’s annual Paws for Wine fundraiser is set for 6-10:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Swiftel Center. The event includes a wine tasting, plated dinner, raffles and a silent auction. Tickets are $45 at the door and $60 for VIP, which includes early admission with hors d’oeuvres and champagne. For more information or to donate, log onto www.brookingshumane.org or find the organization on Facebook.

The St. Thomas More Catholic School Winter Gala & Grand Auction starts at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, in the church social hall, 1700 Eighth St. S. The fundraiser for the school includes a social hour with hors d’oeuvres and drinks, dinner, and silent and live auctions. Tickets are $75 apiece, or reserve a table of eight for $600. Tickets are available in the church office.

The 16th annual SDSU Black Student Alliance Step Show starts at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at the SDSU Performing Arts Center. The show will feature the SDSU Step Team, as well as teams from other universities. Tickets are $5 for students in advance in the Multicultural Center or on Main Street in the Union, or $7 at the door.
