The Friends of the Library book sale is open to the public from 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, in the Brookings Public Library’s upstairs Cooper Room. Thousands of books for both children and adults, special items and some audiovisual items will be for sale, with most prices ranging from 50 cents to $2 apiece.

Brookings Health System invites the public to tour the new Ambulance Station and Education Center, located at 2300 Yorkshire Drive, from 4-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, during an open house. The new 7,160-square-foot facility creates a headquarters for Brookings Health System’s ambulance service while also serving the health emergency education needs of the community.

Bingo at the Brookings VFW, 520 Main Ave., is from 6:30-10 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22. Cards are handed out at 6:30, and bingo starts at 7. Lunch will be available. For more information, call 692-6771.

The AFB Marquis Metal Works Tour American Freestyle Bullfighting is charging into the Swiftel Center on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 22 and 23, with 7 p.m. nightly back-to-back bull-fighting shows. Doors open at 6 p.m., and ticket prices range from $10.50-$48.50. Learn more at www.swiftelcenter.com.

As part of its Festival of New Plays, State University Theatre will present staged readings of new plays through Sunday, Feb. 24, in the SDSU Performing Arts Center’s Fishback Studio Theatre. “Various Useful Things” by Anne Byrd and “Dad Again” by Deborah Ingle will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22. Tickets may be purchased at the SUT box office in the PAC lobby, by calling 688-6045 or online at sdstate.tix.com. Cost is $20 for adults, $18 for seniors and military, $14 for SDSU faculty and staff, and $13 for non-SDSU students and children. SDSU students are free with valid ID. Some performances may not be suitable for children.

Saturday, Feb. 23

A Kiwanis Pancake Feed is set for 7:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at the First United Methodist Church Community Life Center, at the corner of Sixth Street and Seventh Avenue in Brookings. The menu includes sausage, beverages and all-you-can-eat pancakes. Gluten free available upon request. Tickets are $7 apiece, and kids 5 and younger eat for free.

Brookings American Legion Post No. 74 will hold a pancake, sausage and eggs breakfast from 8:30-11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at the post home, 1229 Western Ave. Proceeds will be used to support the Boys State, Youth Trooper Academy, and American Legion Baseball programs.

American Legion Post 114 will serve an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday Feb. 23, at the Volga Community Center at 109 Samara Ave in Volga. The menu will include; pancakes, biscuits and gravy, and beverages. The cost is $7 for adults and $3.50 for children ages 3-8. Children 2 and younger eat for free.

The Brookings Area Chamber of Commerce Public Affairs Committee will host its next legislative forum with District 7 lawmakers from 9-10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, in the third-floor chambers of the Brookings City & County Government Center. The Brookings Ice Skating Association will present a Try Hockey for Free event Saturday, Feb. 23, with two sessions at 9-10 a.m. and 10:45-11:45 a.m. The event is for kids ages 5-10 years old, and equipment will be provided. The BHS PTA presents the “I Survived the Polar Vortex!” 2019 fundraiser and raffle, held from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, at Prairie Lanes bowling alley. The event includes a raffle, T-shirts for $10, and two games and shoes for $12. Proceeds go to scholarships for higher education and to assist families with education and/or activity related costs.

India Night 2019 is set for 6-8:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, in SDSU’s Volstorff Ballroom in the University Student Union, with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. Come enjoy authentic Indian food, Indian performances, culture and traditions. Tickets are available at the International Affairs Office, Information Exchange, or Multicultural Center and cost $15 for non-students, $10 for SDSU students, and $5 for children 6 years and older.

Monday, Feb. 25

Feeding South Dakota will provide free food for families in need at its next mobile food distribution from 10:15-11:15 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, at the Volga Community Center, 109 Samara Ave. Food distributions provide an assortment of food that may include frozen and fresh produce, frozen meats, assorted breads and/or canned and boxed items. Please bring something to carry your food in, such as coolers, bags or totes.

The Brookings Public Library’s next Adult Craft Class is set for 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25. Participants will learn a beaded blanket stitch, showing how to add beads along the edge of felt ornaments, blankets, dresses, etc. Registration is required; stop by the library or call 692-9407 to sign up.

Need help with your taxes? Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program certified volunteers can help you prepare and file your tax return for free. You qualify for this service if your income does not exceed $55,000 and do not require a Schedule C. VITA will be available from Jan. 29 until Feb. 28, in Harding Hall Room 206, SDSU. The service is available every Tuesday from 9 a.m.-noon, every Thursday from noon-3 p.m., and on Saturdays from 9 a.m.-noon. For more information, contact the site coordinator at victoria.dubbelde@sdstate.edu.

Brookings AARP Foundation TaxAide provides free tax return preparation and electronic filing for taxpayers with low to middle incomes, with special attention to those aged 60 or older. Trained volunteers are available from 1-4 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from Jan. 31-April 11 at the lower level of First Bank and Trust, 520 Sixth St., Brookings. Bring social security cards, photo ID, last year’s tax return and tax records for 2018. No appointment is necessary. Brookings residents unable to come to the site may call LaVonne Tufty at 692-4766 to make arrangements for tax assistance at their place of residence.

If you love to paint, join the painting group that meets from noon-5 p.m. every Thursday at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. Come work on individual projects and collaborate on art talk and ideas. No pre-registration is needed.
