If you love to paint, join the painting group that meets from noon-5 p.m. every Thursday at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. Come work on individual projects and collaborate on art talk and ideas. No pre-registration is needed.

The South Dakota Department of Transportation, City of Volga and City of Brookings will hold informal, open house style public meetings to discuss and receive public input on the upcoming US14-US14 Bypass Corridor Study. The goal is to develop a long-range plan for the US14 corridor, between the US81 intersection south of Arlington and the US14/US14B intersection west of Brookings, and the US14 Bypass, between the US14 intersections east and west of Brookings. The second meeting is set for 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday, June 27, in the third-floor chambers of the Brookings City & County Government Center, 520 Third St. A presentation is planned for 5:40 p.m. Learn more at www.us14-14bcorridor.com.

The Brookings Arts Council will exhibit the artwork of PJ Anderson. His latest photography exhibit, “#JunkOnPavement,” will be on display in the Main Gallery at 524 Fourth St. and runs from June 26 through July 19. An artist’s reception will take place from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 27. Light refreshments will be served, with an Artist’s talk to begin around 5 p.m.

The Brookings Innovation Center will host an annual client appreciation event and invites community members to learn about projects taking place at the park from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 27. The public is invited to come enjoy food, beverages, and a chance to mingle with Research Park clients.

The Brookings Public Library will host a free screening of the movie “At Eternity’s Gate” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 27. Rated PG-13, 110 minutes. Popcorn will be served.

Prairie Repertory Theatre presents “The Wizard of Oz” Thursday through Sunday, June 27-30, at the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center. Showtime is at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 27. Ticket prices range from $12-19, and they can be purchased online at www.sdstate.tix.com.

Friday, June 28

The Giving Closet will host a fundraiser Friday and Saturday, June 28-29, at 1303 Trail Ridge Road, Brookings. Friday hours are 11 a.m.-6 p.m. The event includes a garage sale, walking taco feed, and a quilt raffle.

Critical Mass Ride gone green – the bike ride will be held  this Friday at the usual time/usual place (6 p.mm/corner of Fifth Street and & Main Avenue) for a tour of sustainability spots in Brookings. Tour route will pass pollinator gardens, LEED certified buildings, the Passive House, solar panels, and Brookings old landfill re-purposed into a City Park.

The Brookings Farmers Market is open from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, June 29, in the 300 block of Sixth Avenue, between the Brookings Public Library and the Brookings County Courthouse.

The city of Flandreau will celebrate its Sesquicentennial July 2-7 with a free kick-off Tonic Sol-fa concert starting at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 29, at the Flandreau Band Shell at the east end of Flandreau. There will be limited public parking, so attendees are encouraged to park at the Flandreau High School and ride the charter bus to and from the event. This will begin transporting people at 5 p.m. There will be food vendors at the event, and bleacher seating and park benches will be available. Attendees are also encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets.

The Brookings County Museum in Volga’s City Park is open 1-4 p.m. daily, seven days a week.

Zion Lutheran Church will host a pie/ice cream social and bake sale from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Sunday, June 30, at Fifth and Sherwood Avenue in White. The menu includes barbecues, hot dogs, chips, homemade pie and SDSU ice cream, plus baked goods for sale in time for you Fourth of July events. Free-will offerings will go to mission projects.

Brookings Area Community Band’s next concert is set for 7:30 p.m. Sunday, June 30, at the Pioneer Park Bandshell. “A Star-Spangled Spectacular” – A traditional patriotic spectacular including a generous portion of Sousa marches, free watermelon, and a tribute to veterans. In case of rain, concerts start at 7:45 p.m. and are moved indoors to the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center. Each evening, a complimentary snack will be served by band volunteers. For more information on how to join the band or about the series, call Kathy Larsen at 695-0397.

The city of Flandreau will recognize its 150th anniversary with a Sesquicentennial Celebration July 2-7. Attendees may pick up registration packets at the Flandreau Elementary Commons from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, July 2. Wednesday, July 3

First Bank & Trust will serve up free SDSU ice cream during Ice Cream Day, held from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, at its downtown bank, 520 Sixth St. All are welcome.

The city of Flandreau will recognize its 150th anniversary with a Sesquicentennial Celebration July 2-7. Self-guided tours of the school can be done from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday, July 3. A Dusk-to-Dawn Dance, featuring Highway Call, is planned from 8 p.m.-midnight at the Japanese Gardens.

Thursday, July 4

The city of Flandreau will recognize its 150th anniversary with a Sesquicentennial Celebration July 2-7. A Fourth of July Festival will be held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday at the Moody County Museum, with a 1 p.m. alumni band concert. An inflatable entertainment park will be open from 2-8 p.m. at Royal River Casino. Fireworks sponsored by Royal River Casino start at dusk.

Brookings’ annual Fourth of July parade starts at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 4. The parade starts at the corner of Third Street and Third Avenue, near the Brookings Police Department, and continues east on Third Street, north on Medary Avenue, west on Sixth Street and south on Main Avenue.

The annual Uncle Sam Jam starts at 5 p.m. Thursday, July 4, at the Swiftel Center, 824 32nd Ave. The free community celebration includes balloon twisting, inflatable games, sandbox, crafts, kids’ train rides, petting zoo, face painting, Zoomobile, character meet-and-greet, concessions, beer garden, live music from The Rude Band starting at 7 p.m., and a fireworks grand finale outside at approximately 10:15 p.m.
