Feeding South Dakota will provide free food for families in need at its next mobile food distribution from 12:15-1:15 a.m. Monday, July 15, at the Elkton Community Center, 109 Elk St. Food distributions provide an assortment of food that may include frozen and fresh produce, frozen meats, assorted breads and/or canned and boxed items. Please bring something to carry your food in, such as coolers, bags or totes.

The Brookings Public Library will host a free screening of the movie “Guardians of the Galaxy” at 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 15. Rated PG-13, 121 minutes. Free popcorn will be provided.

Bingo at the Brookings VFW, 520 Main Ave., is from 6:30-10 p.m. Monday, July 15. Cards are handed out at 6:30, and bingo starts at 7. Lunch will be available. For more information, call 692-6771.

Tuesday, July 16

The South Dakota Art Museum will host its next Lunch and Learn event from noon-1 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, featuring its exhibit “Flourish: Marjolein Dallinga and Jantje Visscher.” SDAM Director Lynn Verschoor and exhibits curator Jodi Lundgren will host an interactive gallery discussion from 12:15-12:45 p.m. with time on either end to eat or explore. Bring your own lunch and a friend and the museum will supply plates, cutlery and beverages.

Wednesday, July 17

1 Million Cups, a way for creators, artists, entrepreneurs and business owners to gather and share ideas on upcoming projects or new products, will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, July 17, at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. Free coffee will be served.

The Zoo Man, accompanied by his exotic creatures, will visit the Brookings Public Library to give three performances, at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, in the library’s upstairs Cooper Room. With up-close and personal visits from scaly snakes to relaxed reptiles, the program is sure to inform and entertain. Traveling throughout Canada and the United States, performing at schools and libraries the Zoo Man, Brent Mielke, brings a myriad of live animals for kids to see.

The Brookings Public Library welcomes acclaimed Celtic guitarist and storyteller Jerry Barlow in concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 17. Barlow brings traditional Celtic tunes alive by sharing the history, humor and legends behind the music. His current repertoire features many pieces that will be familiar to the audience. If you love to paint, join the painting group that meets from noon-5 p.m. every Thursday at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. Come work on individual projects and collaborate on art talk and ideas. No pre-registration is needed.

Downtown at Sundown is a free music series held from 5-9 p.m. every Thursday through Aug. 22 in the 300 block of Fifth Street. It features free admission, free kids’ activities, cold drinks and local food. The action continues July 18 with headliner Just Duet Dueling Pianos rocking and singing to the best of ’em. At 7 p.m. Thursday, July 18, the Brookings Public Library will host author Steven Wingate to discuss his new book, “Of Fathers and Fire,” as well as to talk about his writing process. Wingate is an SDSU associate professor of English who specializes in the craft of fiction and digital narratives. “Of Fathers and Fire” follows a 17-year-old in a Colorado town as he faces the religiopolitical tensions of 1980 and his own family difficulties. India native Chandradhar Dwivedi, distinguished professor emeritus of pharmacy at South Dakota State University, will speak on democracy in India at a Thursday, July 18, gathering on campus. Dwivedi’s talk at 7 p.m. in the new Founders Recital Hall in the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center is sponsored by the South Dakota World Affairs Council. Admission is free.

The sixth annual Jim Hornby Memorial Poker Run for South Dakota Special Olympics starts with registration at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 20, at Cubby’s Sports Bar & Grill, and participants leave at noon. Cost is $20 per hand, with all proceeds going to Special Olympics.

Brookings Area Community Band’s final concert of the season is set for 7:30 p.m. Sunday, July 21, at the Pioneer Park Bandshell. “Drive-In Favorites” – The season finale features music from the great movies of the ’50s and ’60s. A burger and bratwurst meal benefiting the band will be available for purchase beginning at 6 p.m. The Brookings Committee for People who have Disabilities will serve up free ice cream in honor of the 29th anniversary of the ADA, and the committee will accept donations of gently used, working, durable medical equipment for local redistribution. In case of rain, concerts start at 7:45 p.m. and are moved indoors to the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center.
