On Thursday, Sept. 12, the SDSU Foundation will host the third annual One Day for STATE, a 24-hour challenge for all Jackrabbits to join together to celebrate SDSU and the impact that can be made through private gifts.
Events planned throughout the day include Coffee Power Hour, 9-10 a.m. at Union Coffee; a student-focused Patio Party, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on the Student Union Patio; Giving Makes Me Happy, 3-5 p.m. at Starbucks Café; and the Yellow and Blue Block Party, 5-8 p.m. on the Alumni Green.

The Brookings Arts Council will host the first in a series of six Stretch + Meditation for All classes, presented by Prairie Soul Studio starting at noon Thursday, Sept 12, at 524 Fourth St. This 60-minute class is available to those seeking to find some balance and let go of the daily stresses of life, and it’s open to all levels. South Dakota Art Museum will host a free public reception to celebrate two exhibitions: “S.D. Nelson: Sharing My Vision” and “A Life’s Work: Paul Goble Illustrations of American Indian Stories,” on Thursday, Sept. 12.
Author and illustrator S.D. Nelson and biographer and co-curator Gregory Bryan will be available from 4-5 p.m. to sign their books. Light refreshments and hors d’oeuvres will be served from 5-7 p.m., and the guests will speak beginning at 5:45 p.m. These two exhibitions close Sept. 15.

The Brookings County Democrats will host a Debate Watch Party with 10 Democratic candidates for president from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, at Cubby’s Sports Bar and Grill in the back room. The debate begins at 7 p.m. The Brookings Dems will hold a straw poll afterward.
Petitions to put gerrymandering on the ballot and to repeal the law that places restrictions on petition circulators will be available to sign. Literature for Democratic candidates in the 2020 election will be distributed. The event is free and open to the public.

The Brookings Library Puppeteers’ next puppet show is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, at the library. All are invited to come enjoy the family friendly fun.

The Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center will show “The Plow that Broke the Plains” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, in the Founders Recital Hall. This famous documentary, produced by the U.S. Government in 1936, was written and directed by Pere Lorentz. The showing is part of the center’s Never Dark Thursday series. Admission is free. There will be time for a short discussion afterward.


Friday, Sept. 13

The Brookings County National Preparedness Day Event will be held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, at the Brookings City/County Government Center, 520 Third St. The event will include examples of disaster survival kits, including winter weather kit examples, and the City of Brookings Severe Weather Storm Shelter will be open for tours. Refreshments will also be available.

The Brookings Public Library will host its next Game Night from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, at Wooden Legs Brewing Co., 309 Fifth St. There will be games available to choose from, or feel free to bring your own to play with a group.

Elkton Hero Days are set for Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 14-15, in Elkton. Saturday events include a 5K at 8 a.m. and a kids’ 1-mile fun run at 8:45 a.m., starting at the football stadium; a softball tournament starting at 9 a.m.; a makers market and a quilt and art show, both from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the community center; a petting zoo, 10 a.m. on Main Street; bouncy houses, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. on Main Street; laser tag, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at First Baptist Church; ECCE Car Smash Fundraiser, 1-5 p.m. at First Baptist Church; kids pedal tractor pull, 2 p.m.; rescue vehicle tours, 3-4 p.m. on Main Street; sidewalk chalk contest, 3-5 p.m. at First Baptist Church; taco truck, 5-8 p.m. on Main Street; and a street dance with DJ River, 7-11 p.m. on Main Street.

The Brookings Arts Council will host four, six-week series of music classes that meet every Saturday starting Sept. 14, at 524 Fourth St. Instructor Kristina Gindo will lead Introduction to Guitar for Youth from 9-9:45 p.m.; Kids, You Can Uke! from 10-10:45 a.m.; Introduction to Guitar for Adults from 11-11:45 a.m.; and Adults, You Can Uke! from 12-12:45 p.m. Each series costs $87 apiece. Elkton Hero Days continue Sunday, Sept. 15, in Elkton. Events include a pancake breakfast benefit for Tony Wiskur, 9 a.m.-noon at the community center; softball tournament, 10 a.m.; parade, 12:30 p.m., north from the football field to Main Street; United Parish Church pie contest with social to follow, 1 p.m. on Main Street; taco truck, 12:30-4 p.m.; bouncy houses, 1-4 p.m. on Main Street; ECCE Car Smash Fundraiser, 1-4 p.m. at First Baptist Church; show and shine, wing contest, and face painting by Miss Elkton, all from 1-3 p.m. on Main Street; and a dance, 1:30-4 p.m. at the community center.

The VFW Auxiliary invites the community to a brunch from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, at the Brookings VFW post home, 520 Main Ave. The menu includes scrambled eggs, pancakes, sausage, toast, coffee and juice for $7. The Works includes the above breakfast with a separate plate of biscuits and gravy for $9. Children ages 3 to 7 eat for $4, and 2 and younger eat for free. Come to the Brookings Public Library at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, in the Cooper Room and meet author C.M. Wendelboe. He is a retired lawman who worked in South Dakota towns bordering three Indian reservations, including Pine Ridge, and now he writes mystery and western novels that are influenced by his experiences. Bienvenidos a Brookings will host a Soccer Sunday Community Potluck from 3-7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, at Pioneer Park in Brookings. All are invited to come meet their Spanish-speaking neighbors, enjoy a delicious meal and play soccer. Please bring a dish to share. Sylvia Larson, a South Dakota State University senior from Harrisburg, will perform her senior recital at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15. The recital will be held in the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center’s Founders Recital Hall on the SDSU campus. Larson, a music education major and clarinetist, will feature various works to resemble a vocal recital as an homage to her South Dakota State University singing career. Brookings Health System’s free six-week educational series, Understanding Grief, will begin Monday, Sept. 16. The class series is led by Social Worker Denise Larson.
