A Boutique Bazaar and Bake Sale, a Haitian Ministry fundraiser, continues from 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, Oct. 19, at Brookings Christian Church, 424 Eighth St. Items for sale will include gifts, antique dishes, seasonal decorations, purses, scarves, homemade items and baked goods. Funds will go toward a three-story ministry center to include a school and medical and worship centers.

The Methodist Church in White will host a White Christmas Fair from 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19. The event will include attic treasures, crafts, produce, baked items and jelly. Dessert and coffee begin at 8:30 a.m., and soup and sandwiches will be available starting at 11 a.m.

The Brookings Farmers Market is open from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Oct. 19, in the 300 block of Sixth Avenue, between the Brookings Public Library and the Brookings County Courthouse.

The fifth annual Uptown Girls Craft Show, sponsored by the Brookings General Federation of Women’s Clubs, will be held from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the First Lutheran Gym at Eighth Street and Main Avenue, Brookings. Coffee, rolls and lunch will be available through the Mission Coffeehouse supporting the Belize mission, and sponsor proceeds will support community projects.

Brookings Koinonia Group will host its fifth annual arts, crafts and bake sale, raffle and silent auction from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at Bethel Baptist Church, 714 17th Ave. S., Brookings. The raffle is for a handmade, queen-size Native American star quilt; tickets are one for $5 or three for $12. Proceeds will go toward helping the foster children’s program in Brookings and the surrounding areas. All are welcome.

The Friends of the Library Book Sale is open to the public from 9:30 a.m-5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, in the upstairs Cooper Room at the Brookings Public Library. Come check out thousands of adult and children’s books, special items, and some audiovisual items. Prices range from 50 cents to $2.

A free screening of Fight the New Drugs documentary “Brain, Heart, World” will start at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at Brookings Cinema 8. This is a three-part documentary series highlighting how porn affects individuals, relationships and society as a whole. A question-and-answer session with a FTND representative will follow the film.

The Brookings Ice Skating Association invites kids ages 4-10 years old to “Try Hockey for Free!” on Saturday, Oct. 19, at Larson Ice Center. Sessions are from noon-1 p.m. and 1-2 p.m. Pick the session that works best for you and register at www.brookingsrangers.com. Walk-ins are also welcome.

The Brookings Public Library Children’s Department will host a Star Wars Reads Party from 1-3 p.m. Saturday. Oct. 19, at the library. Star Wars fans are invited to come enjoy food, activities, books, photo opportunities, special guests and more. Costumes are welcome.

The dedication of Langland Field will be held from 5-8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at the ballfield in Aurora. The goal is to toss the ball around, grill some food, talk about old times, and raise a little money to help support youth baseball in Aurora. The dedication ceremony to rename the field in honor of the late Jake Langland will take place at 6:30 p.m.

State University Theatre will present “Jekyll & Hyde: The Musical” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center at South Dakota State University. The show is not recommended for children. The State University Theatre box office will be open from noon-4 p.m. through Friday and 90 minutes prior to each performance. Tickets are also available online at www.sdstate.tix.com. Cost ranges from $12-$19 apiece.

The Brookings Dance Club invites all dancers 21 and older to its Homecoming & Halloween Dance, set for 8 p.m.-midnight Saturday, Oct. 19, at McKnight Community Center in White. Admission is $10 per person.

Sunday, Oct. 20

The VFW Auxiliary invites the community to a brunch from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, at the Brookings VFW post home, 520 Main Ave. The menu includes scrambled eggs, pancakes, sausage, toast, coffee and juice for $7. The Works includes the above breakfast with a separate plate of biscuits and gravy for $9. Children ages 3 to 7 eat for $4, and 2 and younger eat for free. Proceeds from the breakfast this month will go to the Brookings Domestic Abuse Shelter. For more information on the brunch, call 692-8771.

McCrory Gardens will host its Fall Festival from noon-5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20. The gardens will be filled with beautiful colors, there will be pumpkins available to decorate for $5 apiece, and puppets will be ready to give tours.

The Brookings Arts Council will host an Alcohol Ink on Black Tile class from 12:30-2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, at 524 Fourth St. This class with artist Melanie Gabbert-Gatchell will challenge students from sixth grade through adult in exploring and learning how to combine inks to create images on black tiles. Cost is $47 per person. The Omer String Quartet will open the 2019-20 season for the Brookings Chamber Music Society performing an all-Beethoven program at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, in the Founders Recital Hall at the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center at South Dakota State University. Individual tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for students, and season tickets are also available. The Buffalo Ridge Chorale along with the Oak Lake String Band will present their fall concert, “Home on the Range,” at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, at Christ Lutheran Church, Hendricks, Minnesota. The concert selections include “For the Beauty of the Earth,” Stephen Paulus’s “The Old Church,” “Home on the Range” and many more. Admission is $8, and children 14 and under are free.

Monday, Oct. 21

Feeding South Dakota will provide free food for families in need at its next mobile food distribution from 12:15-1:15 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21, at the Elkton Community Center, 109 Elk St. Food distributions on a first-come, first served basis provide an assortment of food that may include frozen and fresh produce, frozen meats, assorted breads and/or canned and boxed items. Please bring something to carry your food in, such as coolers, bags or totes. A photo ID is required.

The dean of pharmacy from the University of Southern California will give the keynote address at the fall convocation for the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions at South Dakota State University. Vassilios Papadopoulos will give the message, “Transforming the face of pharmacy by leading the convergence of science, healthcare and policy,” at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21, in Volstorff Ballroom B in the University Student Union. The public presentation is held in conjunction with the 29th annual Pharmacy Research Presentations, which are from 1 to 3 p.m. in Volstorff Ballroom A. The poster presentations by undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral students will be judged by SDSU faculty members. The exhibits are also open to the public during judging.

The Brookings Public Library will hold a haunted library-themed escape room from Monday, Oct. 21, to Thursday, Oct. 24, with slots starting at 6:15 p.m. each night. In this escape room, teams are trapped in a spine-chilling abandoned library and must find the clues to get out alive. Teams have 20 minutes before the terrifying Book of Shadows sends teams to their grave. This program is free to the public. Participants must be 14 and older. Registration is required due to limited space. Groups of six or fewer can sign up by visiting the circulation desk or contacting the library at 692-9407.

Tuesday, Oct. 22

The South Dakota Art Museum Guild will meet Tuesday, Oct. 22, at the museum for a presentation by Sioux Falls artist Stephen Randall, a Vietnam War artist and avid plein air artist. The program is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served at 9:30 a.m., followed by the program and a short meeting at 10:00 a.m. The Guild has reserved a BATA bus to provide attendees with transportation to and from the museum. The bus will pick up attendees at the north end of the Brookings Mall parking lot at 9 a.m. and leave the museum at 11:15 a.m. for the return trip. Wednesday, Oct. 23

1 Million Cups, a way for creators, artists, entrepreneurs and business owners to gather and share ideas on upcoming projects or new products, will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. Free coffee will be served.

Brookings Committee for People Who Have Disabilities member and author Mark Sternhagen, who contracted the Polio virus as a child, will speak about disabilities, being disabled and disability awareness at “What If It Was Me?” at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, at Bailey Rotunda D.
