BROOKINGS – South Dakota State University’s School of Design has chosen Mayumi Amada as its third Stuart Artist-in-Residence. She will be on campus Sept. 18 through Oct. 13.
Amada will deliver a public lecture Sept. 26 at 6:30 p.m. at the South Dakota Art Museum Auditorium. There will be an open studio event Oct. 12 at 4 p.m. at the Ritz Gallery in Grove Hall.
"The Stuart Artist-in-Residence Selection Committee is looking forward to Mayumi Amada’s visit to campus. Her work personifies the committee’s goal of bringing an artist to campus to share their conceptual intent through visual artwork produced while in residency at SDSU,” said Scott Wallace, the chair of the 2017 Stuart Artist-in-Residence committee. Wallace is a professor of sculpture in the School of Design.
Amada, who was born in Japan, graduated from the University of Minnesota with a master of fine arts degree in sculpture. She has been a resident at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, and exhibits her work nationally and internationally.
Her recent work is focused on mortality in eternity and eternity in mortality. She is exploring themes such as repeated generations, ancestry and a circle of life. Through her work, she is hoping that the viewers have a moment to think about their own lives, and motivate them to consider what they want to or need to do to lead a fulfilling life.
The Ritz Gallery will hold open studio hours from 9-11 a.m., 2-4 p.m. and 6-7 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays during Amada’s time at State.
The events are free and open to the public. For parking and additional information, please contact the School of Design at 688-4103 or sdsu.schoolofdesign@sd-state.edu.
This event is sponsored by the South Dakota State University School of Design and funded by the Joe and Signe Stuart Fund.
